GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Geneva College baseball team dropped a single game at Pitt-Greensburg on Thursday afternoon, 18-8. The Golden Tornadoes are now 6-9.
Geneva got on the board in the top of the first. Sophomore Connor O'Brien and junior David Toruno led off with singles and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch and an RBI-single from junior Tim Hermansen, giving the Golden Tornadoes an early 2-0 lead.
Freshman Collin Porter got the start, and he struggled with his command. Porter walked the first three batters he faced, eventually leading to four Pitt-Greensburg runs in the frame.
Geneva pulled one back in the top of the second when freshman Noah Avey drove home sophomore Eric Gonzalez. However, the control issues continued in the second inning as seven walks from Geneva pitchers led to seven runs for the Bobcats, extending the Pitt-Greensburg lead to 11-3.
Gonzalez drove home Hermansen with a single in the top of the third, but Pitt-Greensburg answered right back with three more runs in the bottom of the inning.
Over the final six innings, freshman Kirk Bearjar drove in two runs, Toruno added an RBI-single, and freshman Ethan Blair added a home run in the ninth in the 18-8 loss.
Geneva and Pitt-Greensburg actually finished with the same number of hits, 17, but 12 walks proved costly for the Golden Tornado pitchers. Toruno and Gonzalez paced the offense with three hits apiece.
The baseball team will get a chance to play at home next, hosting Clarks Summit for a doubleheader on Monday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
