BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Senior Jacques Guillembet and freshman Braiden Smalley provided the highlight of the day for the Geneva College men's tennis team in its match with perennially strong Grove City on Tuesday in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener for both squads, coming from behind to win a tiebreaker in first doubles. Grove City won the other eight matches to defeat the Golden Tornadoes, 8-1. Geneva's record is now 2-3 overall, 0-1 in the PAC. Grove City improved to 5-3, 1-0 in the PAC.
Grove City took the first two doubles matches of the day, while Guillembet and Smalley took their match in #1 doubles the distance. Trailing 6-4, the duo battled back to get the match to a tiebreaker. Geneva jumped ahead 6-3 in the tiebreaker before the Wolverine duo answered with two points. Geneva won the next point, though, to secure the win, 8-7 (7-5). It marks the first time the Golden Tornadoes have defeated Grove City in #1 doubles since the varsity program restarted in 2015.
The Golden Tornadoes didn't have much success in singles action, though, unable to win a set in the six matches. Guillembet did take his second set to a tiebreaker.
"Grove City remains a powerhouse," said Head Coach Mandee Craft. "It was awesome to get a win at first doubles, and overall, we discovered some things we need to work on for next week, which is another positive."
The men will look to rebound on Monday when they travel to Westminster for a 4:00 p.m. match with the Titans.
