BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College men's volleyball team put together an impressive hitting performance, its second-best in school history, in a convincing sweep (25-8, 26-24, 25-12) against Mount Aloysius inside Metheny Fieldhouse on Wednesday night. The victory kept the Golden Tornadoes perfect in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) at 9-0, evening their overall record to 13-13.
The impressive hitting performance started early, led by senior Jake Williams. He and junior Emerson Spear had two early kills as the Golden Tornadoes opened the match with five straight kills in scoring the first eight points of set one. Williams added another kill, along with an ace, in pushing the Geneva advantage to 13-1. Junior Carter Milroy finished off the set, 25-8, with a kill, as the Golden Tornadoes finished with a .650 hitting percentage on 13 kills and no errors.
The second set was the closest of the match. With the set tied at 10-10, Geneva got three kills from Williams as part of a 6-1 run to give the Golden Tornadoes a 16-11 edge. The Mounties battled back later in the set, though, using a 6-1 run of their own to take a 21-20 lead. A kill each from Williams and Spear helped Geneva answer with a four-point run, but Mount Aloysius fought off three set points to pull even at 24-24. However, a kill from sophomore Decker Milroy, followed by a Mountie error, gave Geneva the set, 26-24.
The third set was similar to the first set. Two more kills from Williams helped Geneva take an early 6-2 lead. The Golden Tornadoes then strung together nine straight points midway through the set to grab a 20-7 advantage. Williams had four kills in the run, including three straight at one point. Geneva easily closed out the set from there, 25-12. The Golden Tornadoes hit an even better .739 in the set on 18 kills and one error.
Williams was the star of the night for Geneva, finishing with 17 kills, one off his career high, on a tremendous .800 hitting percentage. As a team the Golden Tornadoes hit .512, second highest for a match in school history. Geneva finished with 44 kills and just three errors. Graduate student Curtis Thomas led the offense with 22 assists, while Williams added three aces and sophomore Joshua Sangrey a team-best eight digs.
Geneva will face a much stiffer test on Saturday when the Golden Tornadoes host Thiel at Alderson Broaddus in a tri-match, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
