Tough Day for Softball at Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Geneva College dropped a pair of games on a cold day at Allegheny on Thursday afternoon by scores of 10-2 and 4-1.  The Golden Tornadoes now stand at 6-12 overall, 1-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).

Senior Haley Smith got the ball in the circle in game one, and Allegheny got its offense going early, plating four runners in the bottom of the second to give the Gators an early advantage.

Graduate student Madison Smith got Geneva on the board in the top of the third with a home run over the left field fence.  Allegheny answered that run with one in the bottom of frame.

An RBI-triple from graduate student Sarah Johnson in the top of the fifth plated another Geneva run, but Allegheny erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game, 10-2.

Geneva managed just four hits, while Smith had her first rough start of the season and took the loss, dropping her record to 5-2.

Because of the short start in game one, Smith got the ball in the circle again in the second game, and Allegheny once again took an early lead, this time with a run in the bottom of the first.

Geneva pulled even with a run in the third on an RBI-double from junior Julia Hart, but the Gators answered right back in the bottom of inning with two runs to retake the lead, 3-1.

Freshman McKenzie Rapp relieved Smith in the fourth inning and kept Allegheny off the board for an inning, but the Gators added to their lead with a run in the fifth.

The Geneva offense was unable to mount a comeback and fell, 4-1.  The Golden Tornadoes managed just six hits in game two, with Johnson and Hart contributing two apiece.

The women are scheduled to be back in action on Saturday when they host Chatham for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m., weather permitting.
