AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Geneva College softball team dropped both of its games on the opening day of the season in Florida, with the Golden Tornadoes falling 10-3 to Wentworth Institute of Technology and 7-2 to Gordon.
Wentworth got its offense going early against freshman starter Sophia Tvaroch in the first game of the day. The Leopards scored two runs in the first and single runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead.
The Geneva offense stirred to life in the fifth, scoring three times, helped by two Wentworth errors. However, the Leopards put the game away with five runs in the sixth, finishing the scoring with a run in the seventh to win 10-3.
The Geneva offense managed just three hits in the opener.
Freshman McKenzie Rapp took the ball in game two against Gordon, and Scots opened the scoring with a run in the second and two more runs in the third.
Geneva got on the board in the fourth on an RBI-double from freshman Madison Rapp, followed by an RBI-single from freshman Alex Guzman, but the Golden Tornadoes left a couple runners in scoring position when the inning closed out.
Gordon got both of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth and added two more runs in the sixth to take control of the game, and the Scots closed out things in the seventh for a 7-2 victory.
Seniors Sarah Johnson and Peri Ceasri led the offense with two hits apiece for the Golden Tornadoes. Madison Rapp also reached base all three times she batted, with a double and two walks.
Geneva will try to bounce back tomorrow when the women take on Monmouth College at 9:00 a.m., followed by a game against Fontbonne at 2:00 p.m.
