Bearjar Homers on Otherwise Tough Day for Baseball

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Freshman Kirk Bearjar's long home run was about the only highlight of the day for the Geneva College baseball team, which fell down early to Hiram and dropped a 16-3 decision on Thursday afternoon.  Geneva's record now stands at 12-17 overall.

Sophomore Jeff Hawkins got the start on the mound, and he struggled with his command early.  The Terries scored four times on two hits and three walks in the top of the first, putting Geneva in an early hole.

The Golden Tornadoes had some good plate appearances early, hitting the ball hard, but it seemed to always find the glove of a Terrier.  The Hiram offense didn't let up, adding two more runs in each of the second and third innings.

Geneva got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-single from senior Gabriel Morales, and sophomore Derek Sears gave the Golden Tornadoes a couple good innings of relief, but the Terriers put the game away in the sixth with seven runs.  Bearjar's home run in the bottom of the seventh wrapped up the scoring in the 16-3 loss.

Senior Alex Fee and junior David Toruno led the offense with two hits apiece.

The Golden Tornadoes have the weekend off before wrapping up their non-conference schedule on Monday with a single game at home against Pitt-Greensburg, starting at 4:00 p.m.  Geneva will then play its final home games of the season on Tuesday, a doubleheader against Allegheny starting at 1:00 p.m.  That day will be Geneva's Senior Day celebration.
