BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College men's tennis team wrapped up its regular season on Friday, dropping a 6-3 decision to visiting Saint Vincent on Senior Day at Brady's Run Courts. Geneva wraps up the regular season 7-6 overall, 4-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC).
Geneva had the top two players between either team, with freshman Braiden Smalley and senior Jacques Guillembet earning wins at the top of doubles and singles. The duo combined to win convincingly in #1 doubles, 8-1. Smalley then won his match in #1 singles 6-3, 6-3, while Guillembet easily took his match in #2 singles 6-0, 6-1.
Unfortunately, Saint Vincent had the better depth, as the Bearcats took every other match. They won #2 and #3 doubles, and then Saint Vincent swept the bottom four flights in singles competition.
"Today wasn't what we hoped for, but we have to put it behind us," said Head Coach Mandee Craft. "Playoffs start next week, and we need to bring our best tennis on Tuesday in the first round."
Today's match was the final home contest for Guillembet and seniors Jalen Landis and Jacob Zangas. It won't be their final match, though, with playoffs beginning next week. While the official bracket hasn't been released by the conference yet, Geneva is locked into fifth place and will travel to No. 4 Franciscan on Tuesday for a PAC quarterfinal match.
