LATROBE, Pa. – The Geneva College baseball team dropped a pair of games at Saint Vincent on Tuesday afternoon by scores of 12-5 and 12-6. Geneva's record now stands at 14-23 overall, 5-11 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Sophomore Caleb Graft got the start in game one, and his defense let him down in the second. Two errors early in the inning allowed the Bearcats to score six unearned runs, putting the Golden Tornadoes in a big early hole.
Geneva got on the board in the top of the third when junior David Toruno drove home junior Tim Hermansen with an RBI-triple. The Bearcats answered right back in the bottom of the frame, though, with three more runs, forcing Geneva to make a call to the bullpen.
The Golden Tornadoes added runs on RBIs from senior Alex Fee and sophomore Cael Brandt in the sixth. Geneva pushed across two more runs in the eighth on RBIs from Brandt and senior Gabriel Morales, but the deficit was too great to overcome. Saint Vincent took the game, 12-5.
Geneva was only outhit, 11-10, but the Bearcats bunched their hits together well. Sophomore Zack Sackett led the Golden Tornadoes with three hits, while Toruno and sophomore Connor O'Brien each contributed two hits.
Geneva got on the board first in game two when freshman Aaron Babu's RBI-groundout scored Toruno in the top of the first.
However, the Bearcats answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame off freshman starter Kirk Bearjar.
Bearjar supplied himself some offense in the top of the third, though, with an RBI-single. Bearjar later came around to score on a wild pitch to pull Geneva within 4-3.
Saint Vincent responded in the bottom of the inning. After Bearjar retired the first batter of the inning, the next four Bearcats reached base, eventually leading to four more runs, with sophomore Derek Sears being brought in from the bullpen to get the final out.
Sophomore Eric Gonzalez delivered an RBI-single in the top of the fourth, and sophomore Harrison Burns added an RBI-single in the sixth.
Saint Vincent countered with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Freshman Noah Avey drove in the final run of the game with an RBI-groundout in the seventh, with the Bearcats winning 12-6.
Geneva actually outhit Saint Vincent in the game, 14-12, but again the Bearcats bunched their hits together well. Hermansen, Bearjar, Avey, Morales, Burns and Gonzalez all finished with two hits apiece.
Geneva wraps up its season on Saturday with a doubleheader at Bethany. The games are slated for an early 10:00 a.m. start time.
