Softball Handles Hilbert in Doubleheader Sweep

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College softball team followed up its doubleheader sweep of Chatham on Monday by sweeping a struggling Hilbert squad, who is still looking for its first win of the season, on Tuesday by scores of 8-1 and 12-0 (5 innings).  The Golden Tornadoes improved to 10-12 on the season.

Freshman McKenzie Rapp got the start in the circle in game one, and the Golden Tornado offense gave her some early run support.  Senior Peri Ceasri drove in a run in the bottom of the first, and she doubled home two more runs in the second.  Junior Elishea Reed followed with an RBI-single to give Geneva an early 4-0 lead.

The Hawks never threated much against Rapp.  Hilbert's lone run came on a double steal in the top of the third inning.

Junior Julia Hart drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double in the fifth, and junior Karly Devaney wrapped up the scoring in the sixth with an RBI-single.

Rapp earned the win with the complete-game effort.  She gave up just three hits and one run, while striking out six.  Graduate student Sarah Johnson led the offense with a 4-for-4 effort, scoring three times.  Ceasri and Hart each drove in three runs, while freshman Payton James reached base all three times on two singles and a walk, while scoring twice.

Freshman Jorja Koerner got the ball in the circle in game two, and the Golden Tornadoes blew the game open in the bottom of the first.  Geneva scored ten times after Johnson and senior Madison Forsythe led off the inning with singles.  In total, the Golden Tornadoes brought 17 different batters to the plate before Hilbert secured the third out.

The big inning allowed Head Coach Van Zanic to get a number of reserves some playing time.  Geneva added two more runs in the fourth on a double from freshman Liv Keller to finish up the scoring before the game was called after five innings.

Koerner pitched four innings of one-hit ball to earn her first career win.  Johnson finished with another perfect game at the plate, going 2-for-2 before being subbed out after the first inning.  Forsythe and freshman Brianna Thompson also went 2-for-2.  Keller and freshman Lexi Zanic each drove in two runs.

Geneva will face a much stiffer test when the Golden Tornadoes travel to Westminster on Thursday for a doubleheader, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
