HIRAM, Ohio – The Geneva College men's volleyball team made quick work of Hiram on Wednesday night, defeating the host Terriers 25-12, 25-17, 25-18. The Golden Tornadoes improved to 16-14 overall, 11-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC).
Geneva jumped out to a huge early lead in the first set. The Golden Tornadoes had two different six-point runs in grabbing a 14-3 edge. Freshman Andrew Ubinger had three early kills in the set. Geneva led by as much as 20-7 after a solo block from Ubinger before closing out the 25-12 win on a kill by senior Devin Goodgasell. Geneva hit .542 in the set with 14 kills and just one error.
The Golden Tornadoes jumped ahead early set two as well, with junior Emerson Spear providing a kill and an ace in a five-point run to give Geneva an 8-3 advantage. Hiram closed within 11-9, but the Golden Tornadoes steadily pulled away over the rest of the set, with a kill from senior Jake Williams giving Geneva a 25-17 win.
The third set followed a similar pattern, with Geneva scoring five straight points in taking a 5-1 lead, and the Golden Tornadoes controlled the set the rest of the way. Kills from senior Byron Spear and junior Carter Milroy finished off the match, 25-18.
Williams led the team with 11 kills, while Ubinger and Goodgasell each added eight kills. Geneva hit an impressive .414 as a team, with 45 kills and just nine errors. Graduate student Curtis Thomas finished with 23 assists.
Geneva wraps up its regular season on Saturday with a home match against Hilbert. With Penn State Behrend's defeat of Hilbert on Wednesday, the Lions have secured the top spot for the upcoming AMCC playoffs, while the Golden Tornadoes are locked into the second spot. Geneva will receive a bye in the first round and head to Behrend, who is hosting the final two rounds, next Friday and will play the winner of the quarterfinal match between Thiel and Hiram.
