Baseball’s Winning Streak Snapped at Chatham

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – It was a tough night for the Geneva College baseball team's pitching and defense at Chatham on Thursday evening, and the Golden Tornadoes saw their three-game winning streak come to an end, 10-6.  Geneva dropped to 11-13 overall, 4-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.

Junior David Toruno continued his recent torrid streak on Thursday, and his one-out double in the first led to an early run for Geneva.

Sophomore Derek Sears got the start for the Golden Tornadoes, and the first inning proved rough for Sears and the defense.  Chatham scored four times on one single, a walk, a hit batter and three errors before Geneva finally got out of the inning.

The Golden Tornadoes answered back in the top of the second.  Toruno hit a two-run triple, and he came in to score on an RBI-single from freshman Kirk Bearjar to pull Geneva level at 4-4.

Chatham immediately answered back in the bottom of the second with two runs, and the Cougars added two more in the third, knocking Sears out of the game.

Geneva got good relief from senior Timothy Munz, who provided multiple scoreless innings which allowed the Golden Tornadoes a chance to come back.

Toruno came through with another two-run double in the top of the seventh, but an infield miscue in the bottom of the inning allowed Chatham to answer with two runs.  Those runs proved to be the last ones of the game.

Sears took the loss, while Munz gave the Golden Tornadoes 5.1 strong innings of relief.

Toruno finished the night 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple, two runs and four RBIs.  Junior Tim Hermansen also added two hits for the Golden Tornadoes.

Geneva will try to get back into the win column on Saturday when the Golden Tornadoes host Thiel for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
