Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Visiting Thiel

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's volleyball team has played its best volleyball of the season over the past week, and the ladies strong play continued on Thursday night with a convincing sweep of visiting Thiel 25-16, 25-14, 25-18.  The Golden Tornadoes have now won three straight matches and improved to 6-4 on the season.

Geneva opened the match with a kill from junior Kami Mummau and a double block from junior Megan Veon and freshman Katie Seboe to take a quick 2-0 lead.  The Golden Tornadoes struggled over the next few minutes, though, with Thiel going on an 8-1 run to take an 8-3 lead.  Geneva was its own worst enemy, with seven of those points coming off Geneva errors.  A timeout from Head Coach Wendy Smith seemed to get the ladies back on track, though.  Back-to-back kills from senior Destiny Pratt ignited a 9-0 Golden Tornado run, and Geneva never trailed again.  A couple kills from Mummau and aces from junior Zoe Pifer and senior Samantha Peachey pushed the lead to 19-11.  Back-to-back aces from Mummau extended the lead further, 22-12, and a double block from Peachey and Pratt finished off the set, 25-16.

The second set was tight early before Geneva took control midway through the set.  Kills from Mummau, Veon and senior Tess Neville were part of a four-point run to give the Golden Tornadoes a 14-11 edge.  After a Tomcat point, Geneva added five more straight points.  Veon had two kills and junior Kennedi Stockey an ace in the stretch.  In fact, the women finished the set on a 15-3 run in easily winning, 25-14.

A kill and an ace from Neville, along with a kill from Mummau, were part of another four-point run early in the third set to give Geneva an 8-5 advantage, and the Golden Tornadoes never let Thiel put together any runs to get back into the match.  A kill from Veon, an ace from Mummau and a kill from freshman Julia Jordon gave Geneva match point, 24-17, and another kill from Jordon finished off the match, 25-18.

Mummau led the team with ten kills, while Veon was right behind with nine kills.  Pratt added seven kills on a .462 hitting percentage.  As a team Geneva hit .234, compared to just .037 for the Tomcats.  Peachey directed the offense with 23 assists.  Mummau added five aces and eight digs in the win.  Pratt also contributed a team-best three blocks.

The women will try to keep their winning streak alive when they head to Allegheny on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. match.
