CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Geneva College football team was unable to find any success, offensively or defensively, at Case Western Reserve on Saturday night, with the Spartans defeating the Golden Tornadoes 42-7. Geneva drops to 1-2 overall with the loss.
Geneva was excited to welcome back junior starting quarterback Brutus Ogilvie, who missed the first two games due to injury. His presence couldn't kick start the offense, though. After a couple empty Golden Tornado drives, Case Western got on the board first with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Alex Fromberg to Noah Coyne.
The Spartans added to their lead early in the second quarter with another touchdown pass, this one 26 yards, from Fromberg to Riley Knurek.
Geneva answered back with its best drive of the game, culminating in a 29-yard touchdown run from senior Kazier Brandt to cut the Case Western lead in half, 14-7. However, it took the Spartans just two plays to respond, with Fromberg hitting Coyne again for a touchdown pass, this one covering 63 yards. That gave Case Western a 21-7 lead heading into the halftime break.
The Spartans added to their lead on the opening drive of the second half, and the offense just could never find any success against the strong Case Western defense.
The Spartans added two fourth-quarter touchdowns to finish out the scoring, 42-7.
The Geneva offense managed just 223 yards of total offense, 139 yards coming on the ground. Case Western countered with 504 yards of total offense, including 295 through the air.
Junior Josh Syster led the team with 59 yards rushing. Senior wide receiver Hilton McClain Jr. hauled in four passes for 51 yards.
Junior Gabe Trexler led the defense with 12 total tackles, while senior Derrick Sneed added 10 stops in the game.
Geneva will try to bounce back next week when they return to Reeves Field for the first time in four weeks. The Golden Tornadoes are set to host Saint Vincent at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 30.
