LATROBE, Pa. – The Geneva men's soccer team continued its winning ways to open Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play with a 1-0 shutout at Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon on the strength of a second-half goal from sophomore Noah Dworakowski. The victory gave the Golden Tornadoes three wins in three PAC games, improving their overall record to 6-4-1.
The Golden Tornadoes had the far better of play in the first half. Geneva almost got on the board 15 minutes into the game when sophomore George Cottenden got on the end of a cross through the box and put a shot on goal, but Saint Vincent's keeper Kameron Rock made a tremendous quick-reflex save to keep the ball out the net. That proved to be the best chance of the half for the men, who completely shut down the Bearcat offense. Saint Vincent failed to register a shot in the half, while Geneva finished with eight shots.
The second half was a more even affair for the first 25 minutes. The Bearcats got a couple shots off from long range that junior goalkeeper Evan Shale was able to cleanly save. Geneva struggled to string much of an offense together until the men broke through in the 73rd minute. The Golden Tornadoes earned a free kick on their side of the field, which junior Ian Tweed sent a long ball into the box. Dworakowski beat both the Saint Vincent defense, and Saint Vincent's keeper, to the ball, allowing him to sneak through the box and head the ball into the Saint Vincent net. It was Dworakowski's first career goal.
The defense locked down Saint Vincent over the final 17 minutes to seal the victory and earn their third straight shutout since beginning PAC play.
The final stats showed the control Geneva had over most of the game. Geneva had a 17-6 edge in shots and 7-4 advantage in shot on goal. The Golden Tornadoes also had a 5-1 lead in corner kicks. Shale made four saves to earn his fifth shutout of the season.
The men return home after two straight road wins to host Allegheny on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. match.
