Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Tough First Day for Men’s Soccer at Blue Devil Classic

FREDONIA, N.Y. – It was a tough opening day for the Geneva College men's soccer team as they traveled to Fredonia University to take part in the two-day Blue Devil Classic.  The Golden Tornadoes faced Buffalo State on Friday afternoon and saw the Bengals jump out to a big halftime lead on their way to a 5-0 victory.  The loss drops Geneva's overall record to 2-2 on the season, while Buffalo State improved to 2-0-1.

Buffalo State took advantage of two corner kicks in the early going to jump ahead.  In the 13th minute, JB Amontaser's curling corner kick curved over junior goalkeeper Evan Shale's head and inside the far post to give the Bengals an early lead.  Just two minutes later, Buffalo State earned another corner kick from the opposite side of the field, and Diego Rivera managed to accomplish the same feat, with his corner also curling inside the far post to double the lead.

Things never improved the rest of the game.  Buffalo State added a third goal shortly before halftime, and the Bengals scored twice more in the second half to wrap up the scoring.

The finals stats were not as lopsided as the final score would indicate, as Geneva had quite a bit of possession and managed several shots.  Buffalo State finished with a 19-15 edge in shots and an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal.  Geneva actually held a slim 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Geneva will wrap up play in New York tomorrow with a 3:00 p.m. matchup against Fredonia.
