Men’s Volleyball Makes Quick Work of Bethany

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College men's volleyball team made quick work of the Bethany Bison on Wednesday night inside Metheny Fieldhouse, defeating the first-year program in straight sets 25-13, 25-9, 25-14.  Geneva improved to 4-2, while Bethany, who is just beginning its build of the varsity program, dropped to 0-5.

Geneva opened the match with the first eight points of the first set behind the serving of freshman Owen Kelley.  Senior Carter Milroy picked up two kills in the stretch.  A double-block midway through the set from Milroy and Kelley increased the Golden Tornado edge to 16-4.  Geneva eventually finished off the set, 25-13, after kills from freshman Daniel Spear and Kelley.

Three straight service aces from Milroy, and back-to-back kills from sophomore Matthew Thoman, allowed Geneva to take a big early lead in the second set, 13-4.  An ace from Kelley and another kill from Thoman extended the lead to 21-8, and a kill from freshman Peter Samuelsen and another ace from Milroy finished off the set, 25-9.

Another kill from Thoman and back-to-back aces from Milroy were part of an early five-point run by Geneva to start the third set.  Kills from Kelley and Milroy pushed the lead to 13-6.  Bethany never got closer than six points the rest of the set, and an ace from sophomore Andrew Ubinger and another kill from Milroy finished off the match, 25-14.

Kelley finished with a team-high seven kills, while Milroy had a career-high seven aces along with six kills, four digs and three blocks.  Thoman had a big match as well with six kills on a .455 hitting percentage.  Ubinger led the team with 11 assists and 11 digs.  As a team Geneva hit .226, compared to just -.092 for Bethany.

Geneva gets onto the bus tomorrow afternoon and heads to Roberts Wesleyan University where the men will take part in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Invitational on Friday and Saturday.  Geneva will take on Warner and Carolina on Friday, and the Golden Tornadoes will wrap up play on Saturday with two matches.
