NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – Geneva's women's volleyball team stuck with Westminster College for all three sets of Saturday evening's match, but they could not best the Titans in any of them, losing 21-25, 19-25, 25-27. It was a tough match for the women in which each set felt like it came down to the wire. The Golden Tornadoes now hold an overall record of 9-14, 1-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Westminster moves up to 16-10, 3-1 in PAC play.
The Titans gained control early in the first set, taking a 6-1 lead right off the bat. Geneva patiently chipped away at the deficit, using a couple of kills from senior
Megan Veon and junior
Emily Nelson to bring the score back within one point, 14-13. Although the GTs kept it close for the remainder of the set, Westminster maintained a slim advantage and rode it out to a 25-21 win in set number one.
Set two was a bit more back-and-forth at the beginning, with the score tied at five just a few minutes in. The Titans went on an 8-1 run to seize a big lead, but two aces from junior
Heather Seubert as well as another kill by Nelson brought the Golden Tornadoes within one. Westminster responded with five straight points to take control of the set for good, winning it 25-19.
Geneva began the third set on a hot streak, jumping out to a 6-1 lead thanks to two blocks and a kill from Veon. The Titans rallied, but the GTs were able to maintain the lead until Westminster tied the score at 11. An 8-2 run by the home side gave them a decisive advantage at 17-13, but Geneva showed some mettle, capitalizing on a couple more kills from Veon as well as a few Westminster errors to take a slim 24-23 lead. The Titans absorbed the punch, however, and answered with a 4-1 run to win the set 27-25, and the overall match three sets to none.
Veon led the women offensively with 14 kills, achieving her one thousandth career kill in the process. She is tenth all-time in school history with 1,003 kills in her four years at Geneva. Freshman
Laura Goonewardene had a game-high 15 assists, and Seubert had an excellent defensive performance with 24 digs. Nelson finished the match with 12 kills to go along with 18 digs.
Next up for the GTs is a road match against Franciscan University on Tuesday, October 22
nd, at 7:00 PM. It will be the second match in the four-game road stretch the women are currently in.
