GROVE CITY, Pa. – Geneva's women's soccer team struggled on the road against Grove City on Wednesday afternoon, dropping the contest 5-2. After going down 5-0 in the first half, the women got goals from senior
Olivia Anson and sophomore
Abby Stover in the waning minutes, but at that point it was too late for a comeback. The GTs' record falls to 1-8-1 after the loss, 0-3 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, while Grove City remains atop the PAC standings with a 6-3-1 overall record, including an unblemished 3-0 in the conference.
The first half didn't include many highlights for the Golden Tornadoes, as a Grove City goal in the 18
th minute kick-started a barrage from the Wolverines. The home side would score four more times before the halftime whistle blew, and Geneva went into the break trailing 5-0.
Half number two proved to be much better for the women, who were able to both tighten up defensively and create more quality offensive possessions than they had in the first 45 minutes. However, it wasn't until the final minutes of the match when anything changed on the scoreboard. In the 89
th minute, Anson ran onto a ball that was bouncing toward the Grove City goalkeeper and was able to punch it past her and into the net to put the GTs on the board. Just 39 seconds later, Stover came wide open on a cross to the left side of the field, and her speed put her one on one with the keeper. She coolly slotted the ball into the right side of the net to double Geneva's total on the day.
Grove City outshot Geneva 29-13 on the day, including 13-8 in shots on goal. Seven of the Golden Torndaoes' eight shots on target came in the second half. Senior goalkeeper
Jade Farnsworth made six saves in the loss, and after Farnsworth went down late in the second half with an injury, senior
Lillie Berryman also made a save in replacement.
The women play next on Saturday, October 5
th, when they travel up to Allegheny for a 4:00 PM match.
