WAYNESBURG, Pa. – After scoring just seven goals through the first eight matches of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, the Geneva men's soccer team put the ball in the back of the net eight times against Waynesburg on Saturday afternoon. The 8-0 shutout is the largest margin of victory in a PAC match the Golden Tornadoes have had since joining the conference back in 2011. It is the latest milestone in a season full of them for the GTs, who boast an undefeated 12-0-4 record, 6-0-3 in PAC play, with just one regular season match to play. Waynesburg now stands at 7-6-3 overall, 3-3-3 in the PAC.
Senior
Caleb Chambers got the scoring started for Geneva when he dashed down the left side of the field in the 27
th minute, beating his defender off the edge and sliding it underneath the diving Waynesburg keeper for the first Golden Tornado goal. After junior
Jeremy Thompson intercepted a pass deep in Waynesburg territory a few minutes later, he sent senior
Carnel Kerr a through ball that put him one on one with the keeper. Kerr slotted the ball into the lower part of the net to double the GTs' lead in the 35
th minute.
Thompson had a goal of his own just three minutes later, courtesy of Kerr this time. Kerr got possession of the ball with space to move on the right side, and he took the opportunity to play a cross into the box. His pass made it all the way through to the back post before Thompson got on the other end of it to punch it into the net, putting Geneva up 3-0. Right before the halftime break, Kerr looked like he was in on net again for another goal, but the Waynesburg defender pulled him down from behind to prevent Kerr from getting a shot off. The defender was given a red card for preventing a clear goal-scoring opportunity, and the Yellow Jackets were forced to enter the second half down a man.
Junior
George Cottenden was the first GT to score in the second half, making a run to the near post on a short cross from Chambers. He just got a foot to it to pop a shot up and into the top of the net, making the score 4-0. Junior
Gabe Singh followed suit in the 68
th minute, receiving a through ball from Kerr down the middle of the pitch and taking a powerful shot that the Waynesburg keeper never had a chance at stopping.
In the 74
th minute, sophomore
Ojha Ojha won the ball from a Waynesburg defender and immediately found himself one on one with the keeper, putting the shot away into the bottom right corner. Then in the 81
st minute, Ojha assisted on a goal by freshman
Timmy Lacek in which Lacek received a long cross by Ojha and finished it off with a back post run. Sophomore
Collin Yeatts rounded out the scoring when he won a ball from the Waynesburg back line, fell down, then got up and rifled a shot in with his left foot in the 86
th minute.
Once again, Geneva held an enormous shot advantage over the opposition, outshooting Waynesburg 26-3, including a 14-1 difference in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Evan Shale only had to make one save en route to recording Geneva's 13
th shutout of the season, a new school record. With the victory, the men also add to their run of matches without a loss, which is up to a program-record 16.
Saturday's dominant victory sets up a highly anticipated match between Geneva and Franciscan, the top two teams in the PAC, next Wednesday, October 30
th. A win for Geneva would allow the men to clinch the top seed in the PAC playoffs for the second year in a row, while a tie or loss would likely drop the Golden Tornadoes beneath both Franciscan and Grove City for the No. 3 seed. Geneva is not only playing for an undefeated regular season, but they are also looking to stay unbeaten in the Presidents' Athletic Conference regular season since October 8
th, 2022. Wednesday's match is set to begin at 7:00 PM.
