WAYNESBURG, Pa. – Geneva's women's soccer team got second half goals from sophomore
Noelle Beare and senior
Saige Musser, but the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets had built a lead too large to overcome by that point and the Golden Tornadoes lost the match 5-2. With just one match to play, the women hold an overall record of 2-13-1, 1-8 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Waynesburg clings to a PAC playoff spot with an 8-4-3 record, 4-3-2 in conference play.
Geneva started the half strong, receiving two shots on goal in the first five minutes from sophomore
Abby Stover and Musser, but Waynesburg goalkeeper Lex Greenlief saved both attempts. The Yellow Jackets responded well, getting goals from Demaree Livingston and Amanda Pepe before the clock had hit 25 minutes. The GTs' defense recovered after that and kept Waynesburg's attack at bay for the rest of the half to go into the break down 2-0.
Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets got two more goals in the first ten minutes of the second half to take a decisive 4-0 lead. Beare cut into the score by knocking a blocked corner kick into the back of the net in the 58
th minute, making the score 4-1, but Waynesburg added another to their lead in the 71
st minute. Musser finished the match on a high note for Geneva, scoring a beautiful arcing goal that went from the left side of the 18-yard line all the way across the net and into the top right corner, over the hands of a diving Greenlief. It was Musser's team-leading seventh goal of the season.
The women both outshot Waynesburg and put more shots on target, winning those battles 18-13 and 11-9, respectively. The Yellow Jackets did have a narrow advantage in the corner kick category, 5-4. Senior
Jade Farnsworth got the start in goal, making four saves.
Geneva will look to wrap up its season with a win in next week's home match against Franciscan. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 PM on Tuesday, October 29
