BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Since Geneva's men's soccer program began play in 1972, they have shut out opponents in seven straight games just twice. On Wednesday night, the Golden Tornadoes set a school record with their eighth consecutive shutout, beating Saint Vincent 1-0 on a late goal from senior defender
Darren Main. The victory was the latest in Geneva's undefeated run to start the season, and the second time in as many games that the GTs have won with a goal in the final six minutes of the match. The men now boast a 10-0-2 overall record, 4-0-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, while Saint Vincent falls to 1-6-6 overall, 0-3-1 in the conference.
Geneva came out attacking right from kickoff, with a large portion of their early possession occurring on Saint Vincent's side of the field. The Golden Tornadoes won three corner kicks in the first six minutes, and it appeared as though junior
George Cottenden had headed the third one in for a goal before it was called back due to a Geneva foul. Despite not seeing success from the early corners, the men remained strong offensively, testing the Saint Vincent goalkeeper with several shots on net throughout the first half. Junior
Jeremy Thompson came free on the right side of the box in the 24
th minute and played a shot in toward the goal that was saved by sliding Bearcat keeper Kameron Rock, and then Cottenden had another excellent opportunity just three minutes later, striking a ball toward the bottom right corner that Rock made a terrific diving save on. Saint Vincent's defensive play kept the visitors in it, and the score was knotted at zero when halftime arrived, with the men holding an impressive 12-0 advantage in shots in the opening period.
Again, Geneva began the second half on the attack, with junior
Wil Dunda getting an early shot on goal and Main clanking a shot off the crossbar. The two sides went back and forth, with Saint Vincent trying to attack on the counter, but still no goals had been scored entering the final ten minutes. In the 84
th minute, senior
Carnel Kerr found himself at the top of the 18 with the ball at his feet, surrounded by multiple Bearcat defenders. He laid the ball off to Main, who took a touch in toward the center of the pitch before ripping a beautiful shot into the opposite top corner of the net from 25 yards out. The GTs held off Saint Vincent for the remaining six minutes and saw the match out for a 1-0 win.
Geneva had a decisive advantage over Saint Vincent in every offensive statistical category, outshooting the Bearcats 22-2, including an 8-1 edge in shots on goal. The men also attempted 14 corner kicks compared to Saint Vincent's two. Senior goalkeeper
Haydn Catalon only had to make one save en route to recording his eighth shutout in a row, and his ninth of the season. He still has yet to allow a goal this year.
The Golden Tornadoes will look to add to their streak on Saturday when they host Bethany College on Reeves Field at 7:00 PM. There will be a Senior Day celebration before the match begins.
