Volleyball Picks up PAC Victory with Sweep of Waynesburg

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's volleyball team entered the win column in conference play on Wednesday night, sweeping visiting Waynesburg 25-11, 27-25, 25-19 inside Metheny Fieldhouse.  Geneva improved to 8-11 overall, 1-1 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.

Geneva pulled away early in the first set.  With the score tied at 7-7, Geneva put together a 10-2 run, with the Golden Tornadoes using good work from the service line to take control.  The women cruised the rest of the way, using an ace from junior Heather Seubert and a kill from senior Zoe Pifer to win 25-11.

The second set followed a similar script early on.  With the score tied at 7-7, Geneva scored five straight points behind kills from junior Emily Nelson, graduate student Savannah Byers and sophomore Katie Seboe.  However, the Yellow Jackets responded this time, answering with 10-3 run to grab a 17-15 edge.  Geneva answered right back with five straight points, though, behind back-to-back kills from sophomore Daphne Alexander, along with a double block from Alexander and Byers.  The women eventually pushed their lead to 24-20, but they had to work to close out the set.  Waynesburg scored the next four points to pull even, and after the team alternated points, kills from Seboe and senior Megan Veon finished off the set, 27-25.

An ace from Seubert and a kill from Nelson helped stake the women to an early 7-2 lead in the third set.  Waynesburg held close, though, never letting Geneva pull away.  The Yellow Jackets pulled within a point at 9-8, but Waynesburg could never take the lead.  Geneva closed well, though.  After Waynesburg pulled within 21-19, the women scored the final four points, with back-to-back aces from Nelson finishing off the match, 25-19.

Seboe led the offense with seven kills, while Alexander and Veon added six kills apiece.  Geneva finished the match with 12 aces, including seven from Nelson.  Byers led the team with 20 assists, while Seubert had a team-best 19 digs.  Nelson finished her night with five kills, 13 digs and those seven aces.

Geneva will wrap up its non-conference schedule this Saturday with a tri-match at Pitt-Greensburg.  The women will face Pitt-Greensburg at 10:00 a.m., followed by a match against Dickinson at 12:00 p.m.
