Football Cruises to Win over Waynesburg to Finish Season with .500 Record

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College football team wrapped up its season on Saturday afternoon with a dominant 33-6 victory over visiting Waynesburg on Senior Day, completing the season with a .500 record for the first time since 2013.  The Golden Tornadoes finish up the year with a 5-5 overall record.

The Golden Tornadoes recognized 14 seniors in the pregame festivities, and then Geneva got right to work.  The Golden Tornadoes got on the board on their second drive of the game when Geneva marched 65 yards in 12 plays, with junior David Reid shedding multiple tacklers on his 9-yard touchdown run.  Geneva converted two fourth down attempts on the drive, a theme for the Golden Tornadoes in the first half.

On Waynesburg's next drive, the Yellow Jackets moved the ball inside the Geneva 30-yard line before sophomore Coltin Hill sacked and stripped Waynesburg quarterback Samuel Barber, with junior Nicholas Ciriello falling on the loose ball to give the Golden Tornadoes back the possession.

Geneva immediately hit the Yellow Jackets with two big plays on the ensuing drive.  Sophomore quarterback Caleb Romano broke through the Waynesburg defense for an 18-yard run, and then Romano found senior tight end Darin Myers for a 32-yard pass down to the Waynesburg 19-yard line.  Six plays later Reid scored again from one yard away, on the first play of the second quarter, to double the Geneva lead.

Waynesburg responded with its only points of the game on a 70-yard drive when the Yellow Jackets' backup quarterback Thomas Burke hit Dagyn Williams for a 14-yard touchdown pass.  Hill busted through the line to block the extra point attempt, though.

Geneva's offense kept up its pace on the following drive, again converting two fourth down attempts.  Romano then hit junior receiver Seth Tyson for a 34-yard pass down to the Waynesburg one-yard line, and Reid scored his third touchdown of the game on the next play to extend Geneva's lead to 21-6.

Graduate student Dante Caputo came up with a big play on Waynesburg's next drive, interception a deep pass by Burke to keep the Yellow Jackets off the board and send the game into halftime with Geneva still leading by two scores.

Geneva's defense continued to give Waynesburg's offense problems on the opening drive of the second half, forcing a Yellow Jacket punt and giving the Golden Tornadoes possession out near midfield.  Geneva again used the passing game to move the ball down the field, with Romano connecting with Tyson for an 18-yard gain on fourth-and-seven at the Waynesburg 28-yard line.  Two plays later, Romano connected again with Tyson for a 9-yard touchdown pass to increase the Geneva advantage.

Waynesburg never really threatened the Geneva endzone again over the remainder of the second half, as the Golden Tornado defense frustrated the Yellow Jackets' offense.  On the second play of the fourth quarter, after a sack from Ciriello and sophomore Lonnie Craft forced a Waynesburg punt deep inside its own territory, the punt snap sailed over the punter's head and out of the back of the endzone for a safety.

Geneva wrapped up the scoring on the following drive on a 28-yard field goal from freshman Evan Baker, finishing off the 33-6 Golden Tornado victory.  The only time the Yellow Jackets's offense threatened in the final quarter, senior Cameron Smith forced and recovered a fumble to stop the Waynesburg drive inside Geneva territory.

Geneva finished with a 336-205 edge in total yardage.  The Golden Tornadoes rushed for 172 yards and passed for 164 yards in a very balanced attack.  Reid led the rushing attack with 92 yards and three touchdowns.  Romano finished 11-of-17 for 164 yards and one touchdown, while Tyson finished with five catches for 79 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, junior Reed Gordon led the way with 10 tackles.  Smith finished with nine tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.  Hill was a disruptive force again along the defensive line, finishing with seven tackles, including 2.5 tackles-for-loss, a sack, a forced fumble and blocked extra point.  Freshman Wyman Shaheen added two sacks.
