BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's volleyball team dropped its season finale on Friday night inside Metheny Fieldhouse, losing in straight sets to W&J 25-17, 25-13, 25-17 to wrap up the season with a 9-20 overall record.
Geneva opened the match with three straight points, with senior Megan Veon contributing a kill and a block, and freshman Laura Goonewardene delivering an ace. W&J scored the next five points, though, and after a kill from sophomore Gracyn Lee and another kill from Veon, the Presidents added two more points, and Geneva could never regain the lead. A few minutes later, a five-point run by W&J extended its lead to 15-9, and the Presidents pulled away for a 25-17 victory.
W&J took control of the second set early, jumping ahead 7-2. A kill from sophomore Katie Seboe pulled the Golden Tornadoes within 13-9, but the Presidents used a 7-2 run to open up a big lead before eventually closing out the set, 25-13.
Geneva jumped ahead 4-1 in the third set behind kills from Veon and junior Emily Nelson, along with a double block from Veon and Lee. However, W&J responded with five straight points, and the set went back and forth before, after back-to-back kills from sophomore Madi DeRuiter evened the score at 14-14, the Presidents scored eight straight points. Geneva couldn't recover in losing the final set, 25-17.
Veon and Nelson led the team with nine kills apiece, while Nelson added a team-high 15 digs. Graduate student Savannah Byers led the team with ten assists, while Goonewardene added nine assists to go with ten digs. Senior Zoe Pifer contributed 12 digs, while Veon and Lee each finished with a team-high three blocks.
