MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Geneva College women's basketball team got off to a bad start on Wednesday night at Allegheny and could never get its offense going in an 83-52 loss to the Gators. The loss snaps a three-game winning streak for the women, who now stand at 5-3 overall, 2-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Things started very poorly for the women. Allegheny opened the game with 20 straight points over the first five minutes as Geneva missed its first nine shots while committing seven turnovers early on. Freshman
Libby Mallah's three-pointer finally broke the ice for the Golden Tornadoes, and it did spark a quick eight-point run, but it wasn't enough to get the offense going.
Allegheny continued to shoot well from the perimeter, and the Gators eventually stretched their lead to 47-21 at the break.
Geneva played Allegheny even in the third quarter, but Allegheny kept up its strong play in the fourth quarter in finishing off the 83-52 victory.
Sophomore
Aizlyn Thompson led the women with eight points. Geneva made just 19-of-73 (26%) shots from the field, while the women committed 28 turnovers against the Allegheny pressure.
Emily Lauer led the Gators with 23 points. Allegheny shot 33-of-77 (42.7%) from the floor, and the taller Gators outrebounded Geneva 54-39.
The women will try to rebound on Saturday when they travel to Saint Vincent for a 4:00 p.m. tipoff.
