Men Dismantle Mounties in Three Sets

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - Geneva's men's volleyball team put together a solid performance on Wednesday night, coming away with a victory over the Mount Aloysius College Mounties in three sets, 25-19, 25-20, 25-21. The win was Geneva's second straight in conference play this year, and sixth straight conference win dating back to last season. The Golden Tornadoes' record now stands at 13-10 overall, 2-0 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC), while the Mounties' record falls to 5-10 overall, 0-2 in the AMCC.

The men gave away a couple of early points on service errors, but they looked to be the better team overall at the outset, taking a 4-2 lead on an ace from senior Carter Milroy. Mt. Aloysius battled back to tie the score at five, but the Golden Tornadoes rode a few nice kills from freshman Owen Kelley and sophomore Evan Puhl to a 10-5 run and 15-10 lead overall. Four straight Mounties points made the set close again, but Geneva was able to pull away and take the first set 25-19 on another thundering kill from Puhl.

Geneva jumped out to an 8-3 advantage in the second set, as a balanced offensive attack from Puhl, Kelley, freshman Peter Samuelsen, and sophomore Andrew Ubinger gave the GTs the upper hand. Aloysius didn't back down, however, and the Mounties stormed back to take a 14-13 lead halfway through the set. Play went back and forth for the next few points, but Geneva finished the set on a 7-2 run to take it 25-20.

The Mounties took the opening point of the third set and did not relinquish the lead for a while as Geneva struggled to gain advantage. Finally, Carter Milroy had a kill to put the Golden Tornadoes up 8-6, but Aloysius kept it close and pulled in front a few points later, 12-11. A 4-0 Geneva run was countered by a 3-0 run from the Mounties, but with the score knotted at 15 Geneva went on another 4-0 run spurred by kills from junior Decker Milroy and Samuelsen. That would prove to be too much for Aloysius and Geneva took the third and final set 25-21.

Carter Milroy had an excellent game, leading the team in kills (8), blocks (8), and digs (10). Close behind him in the kills column were Kelley and Puhl with seven apiece. Decker Milroy posted a team-high 24 assists in the win.

The men will not play over Geneva's spring break, so their next match will not be until Wednesday, March 13th, when they host Penn State Altoona for another AMCC matchup. A tri-match with Penn State Behrend and Nazareth will follow that weekend on March 16th.
