Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Important Team Win for Women on Senior Day

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - The Geneva College women's basketball team fought hard on Saturday to come away with a resilient 70-66 victory over the Saint Vincent College Bearcats. The win pushed the women into fourth place in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) standings, and they now move to 11-11 overall, 10-7 in the PAC. Saint Vincent falls to 11-10 overall, 9-7 in conference play. More importantly, Geneva gets a season sweep of the Bearcats and holds the tiebreaker against them should it come into play for playoff seeding.

After recognizing Geneva's three seniors (Emily Bucheit, Cynthia Milroy, and Mia San Nicolas), the game started with the two teams sticking very close together, trading buckets throughout the first five minutes. A three-pointer from junior Abby Shoaff put Geneva ahead 10-8, but Saint Vincent responded with a quick six-point run to take the lead. A deep three from freshman Aizlyn Thompson evened the score again, and the two teams exited the first quarter tied at 18.

A three from the top of the arc by sophomore Bailee Fletcher gave Geneva the first points of the second quarter and it jump-started a 10-4 run from the women to go up 28-22. Saint Vincent fought back to take the lead briefly, but a steal from Shoaff that turned into an open jumper from Cynthia Milroy gave the Golden Tornadoes a 30-29 lead heading into halftime.

Geneva went on a 5-0 run to open the second half on a triple by Thompson and a nice layup from San Nicolas. The Bearcats came back to tie the score at 37 six minutes into the quarter, but baskets from Fletcher and junior Taylor Milroy kept Saint Vincent at bay and put the GTs back up five. Free throw shooting for Geneva was solid at the end of the frame, and a last-second layup by junior Mackenzie Barricklow to beat the buzzer gave the women a 49-43 lead as the third quarter came to a close.

The GTs pushed their lead to double digits early in the quarter on a three from freshman Madison Kibler, but Saint Vincent wouldn't go away. They brought it back to within one point halfway through the frame, but an and-one layup from Taylor Milroy gave the momentum back to Geneva. Play remained close for the rest of the quarter, but Geneva couldn't inbound the ball in time with 20 seconds left and a two-point lead, giving the Bearcats a chance to tie or better on their final possession. Saint Vincent missed their shot attempt, and Cynthia Milroy corralled the ball, got fouled, and knocked down her two free throws in the waning seconds to give the Golden Tornadoes an important 70-66 victory.

Taylor and Cynthia Milroy tied for team lead in points with 15 apiece. Thompson finished with 11 points, and Bailee Fletcher posted ten points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Mia San Nicolas finished with a team-high 12 rebounds.

The Golden Tornadoes are on the road twice next week, playing against PAC-leading Washington and Jefferson on Wednesday evening and Bethany on Saturday.
