BEAVER FALLS, Pa. - Men's volleyball played solidly against a tough Penn State Behrend squad on Friday night, but ultimately fell short. The Golden Tornadoes lost in 4 sets, 25-22, 20-25, 20-25, 19-25, and their record drops to 9-6 on the season. Behrend got just its second win of the year after a grueling schedule to open the season, and the Lions' record now sits at 2-8.
The match started off well for the men, as three straight aces from senior Carter Milroy followed by a kill by sophomore Evan Puhl put the GTs up 6-2. Behrend fought back, cutting the deficit to one point multiple times – however, they seemed unable to tie the score. Four straight points for Geneva capped by a kill from Milroy gave Geneva a 19-14 lead, but then a methodical comeback from the Lions narrowed the gap once again. Behrend finally tied the score at 21 after an attack error from Puhl, but a 4-1 run by Geneva to end the set allowed the Golden Tornadoes to win it 25-22.
Behrend was the side to jump out to an early lead in the second set, racing in front 7-3. Geneva rallied to keep it close, but three straight Lions kills in the middle of the set put the Penn State branch up 16-11. The Golden Tornadoes went on a 5-1 run finished by a kill from sophomore Andrew Ubinger to bring them within one point, but the Lions closed out the set on an 8-4 run of their own to take it 25-20.
The third set was close from the get-go, with Behrend finally taking a lead of more than three points on a kill midway through the frame to push their lead to 14-10. The Lions maintained that difference for the next few points until the Golden Tornadoes went on a 3-0 run, highlighted by an ace from freshman Owen Kelley, to draw within two points, 20-18. However, Behrend quickly snuffed the comeback attempt out, ending the set on a 5-2 run to go up two sets to one.
Unfortunately for the GTs, they fell behind big at the start of the fourth set, going into a 7-2 hole early. A brief 7-1 run later in the set, highlighted by two kills from Carter Milroy and an ace from junior Decker Milroy, gave the men the lead briefly at 12-11, but the Lions dominated the rest of the way to win the fourth and final set by a score of 25-19.
Carter Milroy had a great game for the men, recording 13 kills and a .321 hitting percentage as well as four aces in the loss. Decker Milroy posted a team-high 30 assists, and Joshua Sangrey led the way defensively with 13 digs.
The GTs are back in action Saturday when they travel to #11 Juniata for a tri-match featuring the nationally ranked host Eagles and Chatham University. The men will then have a week-long break before their next match against Marymount.
