BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College men's tennis team opened the spring season on Monday with its first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match of the year, and the Golden Tornadoes swept visiting Thiel, 9-0. Including its fall season, Geneva improved to 4-0 on the year, 1-0 in PAC play.
Geneva got off to a great start in doubles play. Senior Jadon Hooke and sophomore Braiden Smalley won in No. 1 doubles, 8-2. Junior David Clark and sophomore Owen Landis won 8-5 in No. 2 doubles. Senior Nick Heidengren and freshman Thayne Bodenmiller finished off the doubles sweep with an 8-2 victory in No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Smalley convincingly won his match in No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-2. Hooke won in No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-3, while Clark won 6-4, 6-1 in No. 3 singles. Landis had to battle to win his first set in No. 4 singles, winning the first set in a tiebreaker 8-6, and he eventually won his match 7-6, 6-1. Senior Stone Seip made his collegiate tennis debut after spending the past four years playing on the men's soccer team, and he swept his opponent in No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0. Heidengren finished off the sweep in No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-2.
"We looked good today, for it being our first match of the spring," said Head Coach Mandee Craft. "Thiel has improved from last year, but we were able to pick up a big win behind solid play all the way down the lineup."
Geneva is scheduled to play at Waynesburg tomorrow at 4:00 p.m., but that match might get pushed to Wednesday due to rain in the forecast for Tuesday.
