Baseball Downed by Penn State New Kensington

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College baseball team, after back-to-back conference doubleheaders on Monday and Tuesday, used Wednesday's home game against Penn State New Kensington to get a number of reserves some playing time while resting some weary starters, and the Lions eventually prevailed 12-6.  Geneva dropped to 11-13 on the season.

The two teams actually started the day by resuming their suspended game from March that had one inning left in the game.  New Kensington was leading that game 14-11 heading into the ninth inning, and the Lions secured the three outs they needed to close out that win.

The two teams almost immediately started their regularly scheduled game after the completion of the suspended game, with junior Zach Lemansky getting the start on the mound.  New Kensington scored three runs in the first inning to grab an early lead.

Geneva took advantage of some wild pitching from New Kensington starter AJ Demharter, scoring once in the first and three more times in the second, without the aid of a hit, to grab a 4-3 advantage.

New Kensington retook the lead with two runs in the top of the third, and the Lions added two more in the top of the fifth to go up 7-4.  Freshman Bradley McGuire scored on a double steal in the bottom of the frame to close within two runs.

New Kensington got that run back with one in the sixth, and the Lions broke the game open with three more runs in the eighth.  Sophomore Ethan Blair's home run in the bottom of the eighth wrapped up Geneva's scoring, while the Lions added one more in the top of the ninth.

Geneva will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Alfred at 1:00 p.m.
