Softball Earns Split with Waynesburg in Exciting Doubleheader

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Geneva's softball team faced off against a strong Waynesburg squad on Saturday, taking a 4-0 win in game one before dropping the second game in 10 innings, 7-6. The women matched up well to the strong pitching of the Yellow Jackets, and their record now stands at 12-12 overall, 6-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). Waynesburg is in a similar position, having posted a 15-8 record thus far, also 6-4 in conference play.

The first game began with a bang as senior Julia Hart opened the scoring with a two-out, two-run home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the first inning. The four-bagger was Hart's second of the season thus far.

The Golden Tornadoes struck again in the fourth inning after they opened the frame with a single from senior Elishea Reed and a double from Hart. An RBI-single up the middle of the infield from sophomore Justine Robbins scored Reed, and the GTs went up 3-0. The women scored once more before the game was over on a looping RBI-double down the right field line from junior Megan Gray.

Sophomore Sophia Tvaroch pitched extremely well in her start. She threw a complete game shutout, striking out eight batters while scattering just five hits. With her excellent performance she achieved her fourth win of the season.

Hart was the top performer at the plate for the women in game one, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Robbins and Gray garnered the other two RBIs.

Geneva got out to another early lead in game two, plating two runs in the bottom of the first once again. The Yellow Jackets rallied to take a 4-2 lead, but the GTs responded in the bottom of the fifth inning, loading up the bases with two outs. A walk, a hit-by-pitch, and another walk pushed three runs across the plate for the women, and they held to a 5-4 lead as the sixth inning began.

Each team scored once more in the sixth, with the Golden Tornadoes' run coming on an RBI-double from Hart. The Yellow Jackets evened the score at 6 in the top of the seventh inning, and Geneva couldn't respond in the bottom of the frame. Two extra scoreless innings of baseball were played, and then in the tenth inning Waynesburg was able to pull ahead by a run. The women were able to put runners on first and second with no outs, but an overturned hit-by-pitch call on Reed followed by a Geneva strikeout ended up killing the Golden Tornadoes' momentum, and they lost the game in ten innings, 7-6.

Tvaroch had another strong outing in game two, this time pitching in relief. She finished the game with 4.0 innings pitched, having allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits.

Offensively, Gray led the way for the GTs, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomores Madison Rapp and Alex Guzman each collected one RBI, as did Hart.

Geneva is set to play multiple times next week, with their next games coming on Monday in a home doubleheader against Allegheny.
