Softball Sweeps on Superb Senior Day

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Geneva's softball team put together a dominant sweep of Franciscan on its senior day on Friday afternoon.  After honoring senior players Julia Hart and Elishea Reed and student assistant coach Cailey Shimko for their contributions to the program, the Golden Tornadoes took both games againtst the Barons by scores of 10-2 and 9-1. Geneva now boasts an overall record of 24-14, 15-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Franciscan falls to 1-31 overall, and a winless 0-20 in PAC play.

Franciscan jumped out to an early lead in game one, scoring a run in the first inning, but that would be the only lead the Barons obtained all game. After scoring a run on an error in the bottom of the second inning, the GTs took their first lead in the third on a big RBI-double from sophomore Justine Robbins. The women scored three more times before the end of the inning, pushing their lead to 5-2.

Sloppy play from the Barons allowed Geneva to score five more runs over the next two innings to win the game 10-2 in five innings by run rule. Robbins led the women at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Sophomore Sophia Tvaroch took the win in game one, pitching all five innings and giving up just two runs, one earned, while striking out nine.

In game two, Franciscan again took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but could not add to that for the rest of the game. A two-RBI single from sophomore Jorja Koerner in the second inning gave Geneva a 2-1 advantage, and a double from Hart capped off the GTs' big inning. The women were up 6-1 heading into the third.

The score remained the same for the next two frames before back-to-back sacrifice flies from sophomore Brianna Thompson and freshman Aliya Ottaviani scored two runs for the GTs. An RBI-single from junior Alyssa Lenzi gave Geneva an eight-run advantage in the sixth, and the women took the win once again by run rule, 9-1.

Graduate student Haley Smith pitched a strong first 3.0 innings for the women, allowing one unearned run on three hits and striking out three batters. Sophomore Alena Campbell got the win in relief, pitching a scoreless 3.0 innings and striking out two.

Koerner paced the women offensively, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Hart also collected a couple of RBIs on her double.

The Golden Tornadoes wrap up their regular season with a home doubleheader against Pitt-Greensburg on Monday, which is scheduled to begin at 3:30 PM. PAC playoffs will start later in the week.
