Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Volleyball’s Season Ends at Thiel in AMCC Playoffs

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Geneva College men's volleyball team saw its season come to a close at Thiel on Tuesday night in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) quarterfinals.  The Golden Tornadoes struggled to find their rhythm before falling in four sets 12-25, 19-25, 25-14, 18-25.  Geneva wraps up the season with a 17-16 record.

Geneva looked out of sync early.  The teams alternated the first eight points of the first set before the Tomcats scored five straight to take command.  Thiel steadily pulled away in winning the first set 25-12.

The second set followed a similar script.  The teams alternated the first eight points again before the Tomcats scored four straight, eventually pulling ahead 13-6.  Geneva never got closer than five points in falling 25-19.

Geneva found a bit of life in the third set.  A kill from sophomore Andrew Ubinger to open things gave the men their first lead of the match, and kills from senior Carter Milroy and sophomore Evan Puhl pushed the margin to 5-1.  The Golden Tornadoes steadily took control from there.  Kills from freshmen Daniel Spear and Owen Kelley gave Geneva its first double digit lead, 16-6, and an ace from freshman Alex Smith extended the advantage to 20-6.  Another kill from Kelley finished the set, 25-14.

Geneva couldn't sustain things, though.  The fourth set was tight until halfway through when, after a kill from Ubinger tied the score at 11-11, Thiel went on a 9-2 run to take a 20-13 edge.  The Golden Tornadoes didn't have enough time to recover in seeing their season come to an end, 25-18.

Kelley wrapped up his standout freshman season with a match-high 16 kills.  Milroy and Puhl each had six kills as Geneva hit just .062 as a team.  Junior Decker Milroy led the team with 32 assists, while junior Joshua Sangrey finished with 14 digs.
