Softball Can’t Hold Early Lead in PAC Tournament Opener

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College softball team couldn't hold onto a couple early leads and fell to Waynesburg 7-6 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Tournament opening game on Thursday afternoon, hosted at Westminster College.  The loss drops Geneva into the losers' bracket where the Golden Tornadoes will play again tomorrow.

Sophomore Sophia Tvaroch got the start in the circle, and Geneva gave her some early run support with two runs in the bottom of the first on RBI-singles from sophomores Justine Robbins and Madison Rapp.

Tvaroch battled some command issues throughout her outing, though, and Waynesburg took advantage by scoring twice in the top of the second to answer back.

Geneva added two more runs in the bottom of the second inning to retake the lead when freshman Molly Shelley singled to drive in one run, with a second run scoring on a Yellow Jacket throwing error.

Waynesburg, the two-time reigning PAC Champions, took its first lead of the game with a big inning in the fourth, scoring four times and knocking Tvaroch out of the game in the process.

Waynesburg added what proved to be a key insurance run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run.  Geneva tried to rally in the bottom of the frame, scoring twice on singles from senior Elishea Reed and Shelley, but the Golden Tornadoes left two on base when the inning ended.

Needing at least one run in the bottom of the seventh, the Golden Tornadoes got their leadoff runner on, but Geneva couldn't plate the tying run and lost 7-6.

Shelley and Robbins led the offensive attack with two hits apiece, with Geneva outhitting Waynesburg 10-7.

Geneva will face the loser of today's Westminster and Grove City game tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. in an elimination game.
