Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Wins Third Straight with Shutout at RIT

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Geneva College men's soccer team stayed undefeated to start the season today, taking down the Rochester Institute of Technology 1-0. The match was a tightly contested one, and the Tigers proved to be the toughest competitor Geneva has faced yet. It was the third straight victory for the men, and their 3-0 record after two weeks of play is the best the team has had since the 2020-21 spring season that was adjusted due to COVID-19.

The Tigers had more of the possession in the first half, as Geneva opened the game in a more defensive posture.  While RIT had more shots in the first half, the Golden Tornado defense controlled the center of the box and never allowed any dangerous chances for senior goalkeeper Haydn Catalon to deal with, who was making his first career start.  Catalon easily handled a couple long range shots that came his way, and the two teams headed into the break still scoreless.

The Golden Tornadoes were able to put together a few good-looking attacks to start the second half, with junior Gabe Singh placing a shot on goal that was saved in the 58th minute. The men had maybe their best chance of the game to that point just a few minutes later when fifth-year player Carnel Kerr found the ball at his feet at the 18-yard line, but his shot went just wide of the net.

Finally, in the 69th minute, senior Caleb Chambers was able to score his first goal of the season off the crossbar, taking advantage of some awkward positioning on the part of the Tigers' goalkeeper. The ball fell to Chambers just inside the 18-yard line and he calmly put it away. Junior Mike Rogers was credited with the assist. RIT could not answer, and the final whistle blew with Geneva taking the victory 1-0.

RIT had an advantage in shots, taking 13 compared to Geneva's five. The Golden Tornadoes finished with two shots on net, including Chambers' goal. Catalon made four saves to earn the shutout in his first start of the year.

The men play twice next week, traveling to Mount Aloysius on Wednesday for a 4:00 PM kickoff before returning home for a match against Hiram on Saturday at 7:30 PM.
