GROVE CITY, Pa. – Points were hard to come by for both sides in Geneva's game against Grove City College on Wednesday night, as the lowest scoring game of the year for the women resulted in a 60-49 loss. The Golden Tornadoes struggled to shoot the ball once the first quarter ended, and they could not hold on to an early lead. The loss drops Geneva's overall record to 7-6, 4-4 in the President's Athletic Conference (PAC), while Grove City moves up to 7-6 overall, 5-3 in PAC play.
Freshman
Alexandra Cozzens got the scoring started for both sides with a tip-in layup. Grove City briefly took a 5-2 lead, but senior
Mackenzie Barricklow knotted the score with the first three-pointer of the game. After the Wolverines pushed their lead back up to five points with 4:09 to play in the first quarter, the Golden Tornadoes closed the frame on a 10-3 run highlighted by two more treys from Cozzens to take a 17-12 lead into the first quarter break.
After Geneva's hot run to end the first quarter, both sides came into the second period ice cold. It wasn't until the 5:07 mark of the second quarter when either team scored, with a lefty hook shot from junior
Anna Ulmer finally giving Geneva another basket. Grove City scored five straight points to briefly retake the lead, but that didn't last long. The women responded with another run, outscoring the home side 9-3 over the next two minutes thanks to baskets by Cozzens and sophomore
Monica Lammie, as well as an Ulmer three-pointer. The Wolverines scored once more before the halftime buzzer, but Geneva remained in front 28-25 as each side went to their locker room.
Two quick baskets for the Wolverines gave them the advantage out of the halftime break, but a layup by junior
Emily Garvin knotted the score at 30-30. Sophomore
Aizlyn Thompson buried a three-pointer to put Geneva back in front, but Grove City closed the quarter on a 14-4 run to take a commanding seven-point lead into the final frame.
The women's scoring struggles continued into the fourth quarter, with their first field goal not coming until 6:57 remained on the clock, again off the hand of Ulmer. An 11-2 Grove City run put the home side up 17 points with 3:41 to play, and that appeared to be the dagger for the Golden Tornadoes. Ulmer scored twice more to go along with a layup from Garvin, but the GTs could not come from behind and wound up dropping the game 60-49.
Garvin was the top scorer for Geneva in the loss, finishing with 12 points, nine rebounds, and four steals. Ulmer was right behind her with 11 points, and Cozzens rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points to go along with 12 boards and a team-high three assists. Barricklow also finished with 12 rebounds. The women shot just 17-of-71 (24%) from the field, their lowest mark of the season. Reese Hasley led Grove City with 13 points off the bench.
The GTs head to Pittsburgh for their next game, a 12:00 road tilt against Chatham on Saturday, January 11
