BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva men's soccer team and Grove City College always seem to play each other very closely, and tonight's match was no different, with the two sides fighting all the way en route to a 1-1 draw. In a matchup that has historically been extremely close, tonight's result was interestingly the first draw between the two teams since 2017, with each side winning three matches in the series since then. The draw puts Geneva's record at 3-5-1 on the season, 2-0-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). Meanwhile, Grove City stands at 5-2-2, also 2-0-1 in PAC play.
Geneva's last regular season loss to a conference opponent was at the hands of Grove City, all the way back on October 8
th, 2022. It has been nearly three full years since the Golden Tornadoes have lost a regular season PAC match.
The men came out of the gate with some energy in the attack, controlling possession in Grove City's half of the field and winning two corner kicks in the first six minutes. A few chances from seniors
George Cottenden and
Gabe Singh continued to make things interesting, but neither player could find the back of the net despite's Singh's shot forcing a save by the Grove City goalkeeper. Freshman
Noah Buchanan got the start in net for the GTs, and he made a couple saves throughout the first half to keep the Wolverines off the board, but none of the visitors' shots were especially troubling. The score remained 0-0 heading into halftime.
Grove City appeared to have the better of the possession for the first ten minutes of the half, but the Golden Tornadoes survived and turned to retaliate. In the 74
th minute, freshman
Nick Lo Coco tapped a ball out wide right to junior
Ojha Ojha, who was streaking up the flank. Ojha delivered a low cross into the box, and freshman
Luke Kost punched the ball just past the near post, freezing the Wolverine goalkeeper to give the GTs the lead. Unfortunately, the men did not hold the advantage for long, as just seven minutes later Grove City's Noah Gray delivered a strike from distance that caught Buchanan off guard, scoring to even the contest. Cottenden again had a decent look with three minutes to play, but his shot just went wide left and the game ended at 1-1.
The match was quite even all the way through, with the visitors gaining a slight advantage in shots taken, 12-11. Kost took three shots total for Geneva, putting two on target and scoring one. Ojha received credit for the assist on the goal.
The GTs remain at home for their next match, a 2:30 p.m. tilt against Allegheny this Saturday, October 4
th. After that, the men will hit the road for two away matches next week.
