BETHANY, W. Va. – It was a frustrating afternoon for the Geneva men's soccer team, who went up 1-0 early in their match against Bethany but saw the Bison score three unanswered goals to take the victory. It was the first time the men have lost a match by more than one goal this season, as they have struggled to regain their footing in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play over the last few contests since winning their first two PAC matches. Geneva's overall record now sits at 3-8-1, 2-3-1 in the PAC, while Bethany moves up to 3-6-3, also 2-3-1 in-conference.
The Golden Tornadoes got started off on the right foot, winning a corner kick within the first minute. Freshman
Msafiri Amisi got a head to the resulting cross, but his shot just went wide of the right post. It didn't take long for him to redeem himself, however, as a cleared ball by freshman right back
Logan Pappert fell in front of him just past midfield in the fourth minute. Amisi controlled it, dodged a defender, and calmly slotted the ball past the sliding keeper to give Geneva a 1-0 edge.
It took just five minutes for the Bison to respond. A gorgeous cross from the left wing came all the way through the Geneva box, and Samuel Bedoya slipped his head behind the back line and knocked it toward goal. Freshman goalkeeper
Case Seymour got a hand to the shot, but couldn't push it wide of the target as the goal went through. The Bison continued to pressure the Geneva defense, forcing Seymour to make multiple saves, and they broke through again in the 15
th minute, scoring off a deflection. Sophomore
Adam Thompson nearly knotted the score in the 40
th minute, redirecting a corner kick toward the goal with his head, but the Bethany keeper fell on top of the shot, ensuring the Bison took a 2-1 lead into the break.
The men put together multiple chances coming out of the half, but they could not put one on target. After absorbing the early Geneva onslaught, Bethany punched back, with Ricardo Diaz scoring a goal that just snuck underneath Seymour, his second goal of the match. The GTs tried valiantly to get back in it, but Bethany handled its possession well and held on for the 3-1 victory.
As has been the case multiple times this season, Geneva rued its missed chances, with only three of the GTs' 12 shots hitting the target. Bethany finished with 20 shots of their own, 10 on target. The Bison also won the corner kick battle 8-7.
Seymour posted seven saves, playing in place of the injured
Noah Buchanan. Amisi recorded a match-high five total shots in the loss.
Next up for the men is Thiel College, whom the Golden Tornadoes will host on Wednesday, October 15
th for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. The GTs will then hit the road again for their next two matches, against Hiram and Chatham.
