WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- The Geneva College women's volleyball team has had some struggles this year, but the Golden Tornadoes enjoyed their Friday night trip to Waynesburg, sweeping the Yellow Jackets 25-21, 25-21, 25-23 to enjoy their first taste of victory in a couple weeks. The win extends a remarkable winning streak against the Yellow Jackets, now up to 36 matches. Waynesburg's last win over Geneva came in 1989.
Early kills from junior Gracyn Lee and senior Emily Nelson gave Geneva a quick 4-1 lead in the first set, but Waynesburg answered with seven straight points to grab the advantage. The Golden Tornadoes quickly responded to pull even, though, on a kill from junior Daphne Alexander, 10-10. The teams traded points over the next several minutes until, with the Yellow Jackets leading 16-15, Geneva strung together five straight points behind three kills from Nelson and an ace from senior Heather Seubert. Waynesburg pulled within two points late, but the Golden Tornadoes closed out the set on a block from Lee, 25-21.
The second set was tight early until two kills from Alexander and an ace from sophomore Laura Goonewardene gave Geneva an 11-7 edge. A couple minutes later, two more kills from Alexander, an ace from Nelson and a kill from junior Katie Seboe extended the Golden Tornadoes' advantage to 16-9. Waynesburg had one last surge left, pulling within 20-19 a few points later, but a kill from Nelson helped Geneva regain control, eventually finishing off the set on another Lee block, 25-21.
The third set was tight the whole way. Geneva appeared to be gaining a little bit of an edge when an Alexander kill gave the Golden Tornadoes a 17-14 advantage, the first time either team had led by more than two points in the set. Waynesburg rallied, though, retaking the lead and still holding a 22-20 edge late. However, a kill from freshman Kendall Anderson pulled Geneva within one point, and two points later a kill from Nelson pulled the women even at 23-23. Seubert finished off the match with back-to-back aces to secure the victory, 25-23.
Alexander and Nelson led the team with 10 kills apiece, with Alexander hitting .364. Freshman Ruthie Land contributed a team-high 20 assists, while freshman Julia McChesney led the team with 15 digs. Seubert was close behind with 14 digs, to go with a team-best three aces.
The women will return to action on Wednesday with a road trip to Hiram for a 7:00 p.m. match. That contest will be the last road game of the year as the women finish with three straight home matches to wrap up the season.
