BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College football team's offensive exploits continued on Saturday afternoon on Geneva's Homecoming Day celebration, with the Golden Tornadoes scoring the second most point in program history in a 75-28 win over the visiting Bethany Bison. Geneva has now scored at least 50 points in three straight games, the first time in the program's 130-year history, and improved to 5-3 overall, 5-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), as the team heads into its bye week.
The points came fast and furiously for the Golden Tornadoes against the Bison. After the Geneva defense forced a three-and-out on the opening possession of the game, the Golden Tornadoes went right down and scored, with junior quarterback Caleb Romano's 43-yard strike to senior Keaton Baker the highlight of the drive. Sophomore Brice Findley plunged in from two yards away to get Geneva on the board four minutes into the game. It was a sign of things to come.
Geneva's defense forced another Bethany three-and-out on the next drive, and after a short punt and penalty, Romano connected with senior Luke Crumbacher for a 34-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the Golden Tornado drive to give Geneva two touchdowns less than six minutes into the game.
The Geneva defense again forced a three-and-out, and four minutes later Romano found sophomore Dayne Johnke open in the corner of the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown pass to give Geneva a 21-0 lead just over ten minutes into the game.
Bethany got on the board on its following drive with a touchdown drive. Geneva appeared ready to respond on its next drive, but on the only mistake of the game for Romano, he underthrew Baker on a long pass near the endzone that was intercepted at the Bethany one-yard line. However, two plays later junior Coltin Hill tackled Bethany running back Carlos Cardoza in the endzone for a safety, giving the Golden Tornadoes the ball back.
The offensive fireworks continued for Geneva's offense as the Golden Tornadoes marched right down the field, and Romano found Baker in the endzone for a two-yard touchdown pass to increase Geneva's lead to 30-7 early in the second quarter.
The Geneva defense again got the offense the ball back with a stop, and the Golden Tornadoes added to their lead with another long drive, this one capped off by a one-yard touchdown run from senior David Reid.
Geneva scored one more touchdown before the half, this one on a 52-yard touchdown pass from Romano to freshman Damien Lacks. That score was sandwiched in between two late Bison touchdowns as Geneva took a 44-21 lead into the break. Romano threw for 362 yards and four touchdowns in the opening half.
The halftime break didn't slow down Geneva's offense at all, as Geneva scored on the opening drive of the third quarter when Romano found Baker open along the sideline, and Baker made a defender miss and sprinted 47 yards for a touchdown.
Romano added a 5-yard touchdown pass to junior Cooper Edmiston on Geneva's next drive, and Romano's final drive of the game ended with a 39-yard field goal by senior Ryan Reitler, extending Geneva's advantage to 61-21 with four minutes left in the third quarter.
The Golden Tornadoes added two more scores in the final quarter. Sophomore quarterback Will Patterson scored on a two-yard touchdown run, and the final Geneva score came with three minutes left when freshman Jayce Mauger forced a Bethany fumble that freshman Alex Mastoris scooped up and raced 25 yards for a defensive touchdown.
The Geneva offense finished the game with 576 yards of total offense. Romano ended up with 475 yards passing and six touchdowns, the third highest totals in both categories in school history, just barely behind his 482-yard passing performance earlier this season against Saint Vincent. Romano is now up to 2,943 yards passing on the year and is just 183 yards away from breaking the program record for passing yards in a season.
Baker was the primary beneficiary of Romano's big day, finishing with 12 catches for 219 yards and two touchdowns. Crumbacher, Lacks, Edmiston and Johnke also caught touchdown passes as seven different receivers had at least two catches. Findley and Reid added the scores on the ground.
Defensively, senior Reed Gordon led the team with 11 tackles, including a sack. Senior Nicholas Ciriello added 10 stops, along with a sack, while Hill was active in the interior with eight tackles and 2.0 tackles-for-loss.
The football team will now get to enjoy a much-needed bye week before finishing its season with two tough games against W&J and Case Western Reserve. Geneva's game against W&J on November 8 will be Head Coach Geno DeMarco's final home game, with the Golden Tornadoes heading into the final two weeks of the season with a shot to win the PAC Championship with two victories.
