STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – After clinching a spot in the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs for the seventh consecutive year on Saturday, the Geneva men's soccer team traveled to Franciscan University Wednesday night for the final match of the regular season. The GTs fell behind in the first half but rallied in the second to earn the draw versus the Barons, 2-2. They sport an overall record of 6-9-2, 5-4-2 in PAC play, while Franciscan finishes the regular season at 9-8-2, 7-2-2 in the PAC.
The game was fairly defensive through the first 15 minutes, with neither side giving an inch defensively; in fact, each team had just one shot attempt through the first 18 minutes. The hosts broke through first, with Andrew Goduti sliding a nice shot across the face of the net to give Franciscan the lead in the 20
th minute. That goal seemed to give the Baron attack some life, and they began to come in waves, taking six shots over the next seven minutes, the last of which hit the back of the net to double their advantage in the 44
th minute. That would do it for the first half scoring, and Geneva went into the break trailing 2-0.
The deficit did not bother the men, though, and they came out of the half with renewed vigor. Just four minutes into the period, the Golden Tornadoes earned a corner kick, and senior
Wil Dunda sent it toward the back post where freshman
Msafiri Amisi was waiting. Amisi popped the ball back toward the opposite post, and fellow freshman
Travis Miller got a head to it, knocking the ball in off the crossbar, to cut the deficit to one goal.
The Geneva attack stayed strong over the next few minutes, and the men were rewarded with another goal in the 58
th minute. On another corner kick, from the same spot, Dunda again went back post, and this time it was senior
Noah Dworakowski who headed the ball in. His goal evened the score, and that was where things remained until the final whistle blew, with the Golden Tornadoes snatching a draw after facing a multi-goal deficit in the first half.
Franciscan held a narrow advantage in both shots (12-10) and shots on goal (5-4) in the draw. Dunda was credited with assists on both goals, and Amisi received an assist for his part in the first goal as well. With Dunda's two assists, he moves into a tie for third-most assists all-time by a Geneva men's soccer player, with 25 over the course of his career.
Geneva has earned the No. 5 seed in the PAC tournament, which means the men will travel to Latrobe, PA to take on No. 4 seed Saint Vincent in a quarterfinal match this Saturday, November 1
st, at 4:00 p.m. The Bearcats won the meeting between the two schools earlier this year, 1-0. While this is the seventh consecutive season that Geneva has made the playoffs, it is the first-ever PAC playoff berth in Saint Vincent men's soccer history.
