MOON TWP., Pa. – The Geneva men's basketball team opened its season Monday evening with an exhibition contest against Division I Robert Morris University, dropping the game to the Colonials 93-47. The Golden Tornadoes fell behind early and could not keep up with the hosts, who are coming off a season in which they earned a spot in March Madness. Due to the game's exhibition status, it will not count toward Geneva's overall record, although RMU will receive credit for a victory.
Junior
Nick Million stuck a three-pointer for the GTs on their second possession of the game, tying the score at 3-3, but that was the closest the men would get for the rest of the night. The Colonials scored 12 consecutive points over the next six minutes before sophomore
Austin Matthews ended the run with a layup. Despite Robert Morris maintaining its advantage, Million continued to play well, knocking down four more treys to keep the Golden Tornadoes in it. The Colonials controlled the last part of half to go into the break leading 44-26.
Geneva traded baskets with the hosts to start the second frame, with sophomore
Tommy Coletti and senior
Trey Barker each scoring early in the half. RMU quickly pushed their advantage to 30 points, and the GTs never threatened to come back after that, eventually losing the contest 93-47.
Million led the men in scoring, scoring 15 points in the first half on five three-pointers. Coletti finished with nine points, and Barker scored seven. Senior
Alec Srock was the Golden Tornadoes' leading rebounder, pulling down five boards, and senior
Jonathan Bertovich recorded a game-high seven assists. Freshman
Tayt Lucas finished with three steals in the loss.
"This was a really neat experience for our team," said Head Coach
Jeff Santarsiero. "Obviously their size was a huge challenge for us. We just don't see their type of size and length very often. But I thought our guys really battled the whole game. Nick shot lights out in the first half to give us a spark early, and the rest of the guys played hard to the end."
The men return to action this weekend as they host the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament at Metheny Fieldhouse. They will face off with Lancaster Bible at 7:30 p.m. on Friday evening before taking on Carlow on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted at the door to go to cancer research.
