Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bertovich Stays Hot, but Men Can’t Keep Pace with Undefeated Pitt-Greensburg

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Senior Jonathan Bertovich continued his recent impressive shooting streak with another strong offensive performance on Saturday afternoon when Geneva hosted Pitt-Greensburg inside Metheny Fieldhouse, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the talented and undefeated Bobcats, who left town with a 94-62 victory.  Geneva dropped to 3-4 on the season, while Pitt-Greensburg improved to 6-0 overall, including five victories over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opponents.

Geneva hung with Greensburg early.  A three-pointer from senior Trey Barker and a bucket from sophomore Tommy Coletti gave the Golden Tornadoes an early 5-2 edge.

Geneva struggled to find answers defensively for Greensburg near the hoop, as the Bobcats found success at the rim.  The Golden Tornadoes countered with strong outside shooting as Bertovich knocked down two long range shots, and then another three-pointer, this one from senior Nick Million, gave Geneva an 18-17 advantage nine minutes into the game.

Geneva went cold over the next three minutes, though, and Greensburg took advantage by scoring 13 straight points.  Two free throws from Bertovich finally stopped the run, but the stretch put the Golden Tornadoes in a big hole.  The Bobcat lead increased as high as 16 points with four minutes left before Geneva closed the half well.  Barker and Bertovich hit three-pointers in the closing minutes, and then Barker knocked down a jumper at the end of the half to bring the Golden Tornadoes within 43-34 at the break.  Bertovich led all scorers in the first 20 minutes with 15 points.

Bertovich opened the second half with a bucket to cut the Greensburg lead down to seven points, but that was as close as the Golden Tornadoes could get.  The Bobcats made eight of their first ten shots in the second half, mostly at the rim, and Greensburg steadily pulled away throughout the second half before finishing off the 94-62 victory.

Bertovich finished with a game-high 27 points, shooting 10-of-18 from the floor, 5-of-10 from three-point range.  That total was one point off his career high set on Monday at Pitt-Bradford.  Saturday was the third straight game he's scored at least 25 points and the fourth straight game he's hit at least five three-pointers.  As a team Geneva shot just 21-of-60 (35%) from the floor, 12-of-33 (36%) from three-point range.  Barker also reached double figures with 14 points, including four three-pointers, while Million chipped in with 11 points, with the senior knocking down three triples.

Greensburg hit an impressive 34-of-55 (62%) from the floor, including a 30-of-40 (75%) effort on two-point shots.  Trent Rozich led three Bobcats in double figures with 20 points, while six different Bobcats finished with at least eight points.  Greensburg held a 54-to-12 advantage in points in the paint.

"I was really disappointed by our effort today, especially on the defensive end," said Head Coach Jeff Santarsiero.  "JB (Jonathan Bertovich) played really well, but he can't carry us by himself, no matter how well he's playing right now.  Other guys have got to step up, and we have to get something from the interior.  We have a lot to work on over the next couple of days if we're going to be able to be competitive now that conference play is starting."

The men open PAC play on Wednesday with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff at Grove City.  Geneva hosts Allegheny at 3:00 p.m. next Saturday for its first home PAC contest.
