Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer’s Season Comes to an End on a Rainy, Windy Night in PAC Semifinals

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Geneva College men's soccer team's season came to a close on Wednesday evening on a cold, rainy and windy night in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Semifinals at Grove City.  The Wolverines, who entered the playoffs as the top seed after going through the conference season without a loss, scored early and then sealed the win with a goal in the closing minutes to defeat the Golden Tornadoes, 2-0.  Geneva's season ends with a 7-10-2 overall record, and with it finishes off the careers of a standout senior class.

Grove City rolled through the conference season with some big wins, but the one team that gave the Wolverines trouble was its regular season match against Geneva, with the Golden Tornadoes nearly defeating Grove City before the Wolverines scored late to manage a 1-1 draw.  Wednesday's semifinal match also represented the third straight season these two teams have met in the PAC playoffs, including in 2023 when Geneva defeated Grove City 1-0 in the PAC Championship match.

Geneva faced a stiff wind in the first half, and Grove City scored off a corner kick 11 minutes into the game to put the Golden Tornadoes in an early hole, forcing Geneva to play from behind.  The Golden Tornado defense played well the rest of the half, though, including a couple big saves from freshman goalkeeper Noah Buchanan.

Midway through the first half, a heavy downpour began to fall, and combined with the strong winds left Geneva playing straight into a driving rainstorm that made even visibility a challenge at times.  The Golden Tornadoes kept the Wolverines off the board the rest of the half, though, and went into the break trailing by one goal, but with the advantage of getting to play with the wind at their backs in the final half.

The rain began to lessen as the second half started, though the remainder of the game was played through precipitation.  Geneva really pressed throughout the half, playing with the advantage of the wind, and the Golden Tornadoes generated most of the possession and chances.  Freshman Msafiri Amisi had a good look near the top of the box midway through the half that went inches over the bar.

Despite the pressure, though, the equalizer never came.  Grove City sealed the game with a goal off another corner kick with six minutes left.  Buchanan made a great save off the initial shot from the corner kick, but the rebound bounced right to a Wolverine who tapped the ball into the net.

Grove City finished the match with a 13-5 edge in shots, with the Golden Tornadoes unable to put one of their shots on net.  Buchanan played well in the goal, saving six shots, including some very impressive diving stops.

This senior class, which includes 12 players, wraps up their careers as one of the best classes in recent history.  The group advanced to the PAC Semifinals all four years, including in 2023 when the Golden Tornadoes eventually captured their second PAC Championship in program history.
