Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Garvin’s Big Night Sparks Women to Win at Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio – Senior Emily Garvin had a big night for the Geneva College women's basketball team on Monday night, threatening a quadruple-double in leading the Golden Tornadoes to an 80-73 non-conference road victory at Kenyon.  Geneva improved to 2-5 overall with the win.

Garvin scored moments after the tipoff to start off what proved to be a high-scoring first quarter.  Kenyon scored the next seven points to take the lead, but a couple minutes later Garvin knocked down a three-pointer and a bucket, followed by a three-pointer from junior Aizlyn Thomopson, to level the score at 12-12 less than four minutes into the game.

The Golden Tornado run continued as Garvin and Kira Bonanno hit free throws to give Geneva the lead back, and then freshman Kassandra Garcia hit back-to-back three pointers to close out the 13-point run while increasing Geneva's lead to 20-12.  The lead didn't last long, though, as Kenyon ended the quarter on a 14-2 run over the final four minutes to grab a 26-22 lead at the first break.

The Owls continued to extend their edge early in the second quarter, pushing their overall run to 22-4 to take a 34-24 advantage before the Golden Tornadoes answered back.  Another three-pointer from Garcia sparked the Geneva response.

Garvin followed with a bucket, and then Garcia knocked down her fourth three-pointer of the half.  A minute later, a three-pointer from sophomore Destanie McCullough pulled Geneva even at 37-37.  The women continued their run with two free throws from Garvin, eventually taking a 44-39 lead into the break with a 20-5 run to end the half.

Thompson opened the second half with a three-pointer to increase the Geneva lead to eight points.   The Owls cut their deficit down to four points two minutes later, but the Golden Tornadoes used another run to push their advantage back to double digits, 55-45, after a layup from sophomore Arionna White.  A late three-point play from Garvin at the end of the third quarter gave Geneva a 61-50 lead at the final quarter break.

Senior Anna Ulmer gave the women a boost offensively early in the fourth quarter, knocking down multiple jump shots to help Geneva take its biggest lead of the game, 65-52.

Kenyon had a response, though, pulling within 69-65 three minutes later after a 13-4 stretch.  Thompson hit two free throws to break the Kenyon run, and Geneva made enough plays down the stretch to hold on for an 80-73 win.

Garvin finished the night with 21 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assists and 6 steals in a standout outing in every facet of the game.  McCullough and Garcia added 12 points each, while Ulmer and Thompson each contributed 10 points.  Ulmer also grabbed nine rebounds.  The women shot 28-of-68 (41.2%) from the floor, 10-of-28 (35.7%) from three-point range.  The Geneva defense also forced 31 turnovers.

Kenyon was led by Susannah Zimmerman with 15 points.  The Owls shot 24-of-55 (43.6%) from the floor, 9-of-19 (47.4%) from three-point range.

The women will be back in action on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. home tipoff against Wooster inside Metheny Fieldhouse.
