PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Geneva College men's volleyball team earned a road sweep at Carlow on Wednesday night, winning 25-16, 25-15, 25-16. The victory improves Geneva's record to 4-5 overall.
Kills from juniors Andrew Ubinger and Evan Puhl, along with an ace from Puhl, helped the Golden Tornadoes jump ahead 6-3 in the first set. Five minutes later, Geneva grabbed control of the set with seven straight points behind the serving of sophomore Owen Kelley. Kelley had three aces and a kill in the stretch. Ubinger eventually finished off the set, 25-16, with a kill.
The second set was close early, 6-6, before Geneva put together a 5-1 run. Puhl had three kills in that stretch. Carlow hung close, pulling within three points, 16-13, before a kill from junior Paul O'Donnell regained momentum for the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva finished the set with six straight points, including four straight aces from sophomore Daniel Spear, to win 25-15.
Geneva took an early lead in the third set with five straight points, 11-5, behind a kill and a block each from Ubinger and Puhl. Carlow responded with a run to pull within one point, 14-13, before five straight points by the Golden Tornadoes gave Geneva control. Spear, Kelley and Ubinger each had a kill, and the run was capped off by an ace from freshman Sho Larrabee. The men finished off the match with a kill from Ubinger and an ace from freshman Colton Alfaro, 25-16.
Ubinger led Geneva with 12 kills, while Puhl had a great night with ten kills on an .833 hitting percentage. Kelley added eight kills and four aces, with Ubinger finishing with a team high eight digs. Spear led the team with six aces, while Alfaro directed the offense with 34 assists. Geneva hit .329 as a team.
Geneva will get right back into action tomorrow night when the Golden Tornadoes host Bethany for the first ever Presidents' Athletic Conference match at 6:00 p.m.
