BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Washington and Jefferson College Presidents jumped out to a big early lead inside Metheny Fieldhouse against the Geneva College women's basketball team on Wednesday night, and the first place Presidents led from start to finish in an 89-62 win. Geneva dropped to 9-11 overall, 6-9 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while W&J improved to 18-3, 15-1 in the PAC.
Geneva couldn't get anything going offensively early, and W&J took advantage by jumping ahead 13-2 in the first five minutes. Layups from juniors Emily Garvin and Anna Ulmer pulled the Golden Tornadoes within seven, 15-8, but the Presidents followed with a 19-6 run over the next six minutes to take their biggest lead of the first half, 34-14, midway through the second quarter.
The Golden Tornadoes showed some fight, though, getting three-pointers from sophomore Aizlyn Thompson and senior Mackenzie Barricklow to eventually close within 36-25 at the break following a bucket from Garvin in the final minute.
Garvin opened the second half with back-to-back baskets to pull Geneva within 36-29, but three three-pointers by W&J over the next two minutes gave the Presidents control again, and the Golden Tornadoes were unable to slow down W&J the rest of the game as the talented Presidents pulled away for the win.
Garvin led the offense with 14 points. Barricklow added 13 points and a team high seven rebounds, while freshman Alexandra Cozzens also reached double figures with ten points. Geneva shot 24-of-67 (35.8%) from the floor, 6-of-25 (24.0%) from three-point range.
Katie Kovalchick led five Presidents in double figures with 20 points. W&J shot 33-of-71 (46.5%) from the floor, 5-of-21 (23.8%) from three-point range.
Geneva will try to rebound on Saturday with an important PAC contest at Bethany beginning at 1:00 p.m.
