Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Adds Two More Wins in Florida to Stay Perfect on the Season

NAPLES, Fla. – The Geneva College softball team won twice more on Tuesday in Florida in a very similar fashion as on Monday.  The Golden Tornadoes run-ruled their first opponent of the day, SUNY Cobleskill, winning 9-1 in six innings.  Geneva then had to go to extra innings to defeat RIT, winning 4-3 in eight innings.  The wins moved the Golden Tornadoes record to 4-0, with Geneva yet to play a standard seven-inning game so far.

Geneva jumped ahead of SUNY Cobleskill early.  Sophomore Molly Shelley led off the game with a walk, and after an out, junior Lexi Zanic followed with a walk.  Both came around to score on an RBI-triple from junior Justine Robbins to stake the women to an early 2-0 advantage.

Freshman Micaiah Armstrong made her collegiate debut in the circle, and she was very impressive.  In fact, she did not allow a hit through the first five innings, keeping the Tigers off-balance all game.

Geneva added a run in the top of the fourth when graduate student Julia Hart came around to score.  The women then broke the game open with four more runs in the fifth inning.  Shelley tripled home Armstrong and junior Payton James, who led off the inning with singles.  Hart brought Shelley home with a double, and then sophomore Aliya Ottaviani singled home junior Madison Rapp, who had pinch run for Hart.

The offense continued to produce in the top of the sixth.  Shelley doubled and came home to score on a single from sophomore Kyra Wilcox.  Later in the inning, Zanic came home on a wild pitch to wrap up Geneva's scoring.  SUNY Cobleskill got on the board with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but junior McKenzie Rapp closed out the victory, 9-1.

Armstrong earned the win, pitching 5.0 innings while giving up just two hits, one run, striking out five.

Shelley led the offense with a 2-for-3 effort, including a double, a triple, a walk, three runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base.  Wilcox, Hart and Robbins each added two hits apiece, with Robbins driving in two runs, while Zanic scored twice.

The women turned right around and took on RIT in game two.  Junior Sophia Tvaroch got the start in the circle, and she was very strong from the start.

Geneva gave Tvaroch a couple early runs of support.  Freshman Stacey Rodriguez drove in Ottaviani in the second with an RBI-single, and then Hart brought in Shelley in the third inning with a sacrifice fly.

The Golden Tornadoes added one more run in the fifth when Hart doubled home Zanic, and after five scoreless innings, Rapp took over for Tvaroch in the circle.

Rapp pitched a scoreless sixth, but the Tigers rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh, the last two scoring after two outs were recorded, tying the game at 3-3.  Geneva had a chance to win it in the bottom of the frame when Shelley led off with a single, stole second and went to third on a sacrifice bunt from Zanic.  However, the Golden Tornadoes couldn't get her home, sending the game to extra innings.

Sophomore Malerie Branson made a key defensive play in the top of the eighth.  After RIT's placed runner at second base to start the inning went to third on a wild pitch, Branson fielded a ground ball at third base cleanly and threw out the runner at the plate for the big out.  Rapp then proceeded to retire the next two batters to keep RIT off the board.

Freshman Lydia Shaffer was Geneva's placed runner at second base to start the bottom of the eighth.  She went to third on a single from junior Madison Rapp, and after a pop-up, Branson delivered an RBI-single up the middle to bring home Shaffer and give the Golden Tornadoes the walk-off win, 4-3.

Tvaroch pitched five scoreless innings in her outing, giving up just four hits and three walks while striking out six.  Rapp earned her third win in two days, courtesy Geneva's walk-off win in the eighth.

Shelley again led the offense with two hits, along with a run and two stolen bases.  Hart drove in two runners, as Geneva managed eight hits in the game.

The women will be off on Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday with games against La Roche and Westfield State beginning at 9:00 a.m.
