MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – After seeing their seven-game win streak end last night, Geneva College's baseball team responded in a big way, scoring 16 runs against SUNY Canton in Myrtle Beach this afternoon. In what was perhaps Geneva's best all-around performance of the season, solid pitching and timely hitting defined the game for the Golden Tornadoes as the men got their feet back under them after struggling offensively yesterday. The GTs now boast an impressive 8-2 record through their first ten games of the season.
The hot hitting started early for Geneva, with sophomore
Bradley McGuire and senior
Zach Lemansky both reaching base on first-inning singles. With two outs on the board, junior
Aaron Babu launched a big double to left field, scoring McGuire to put Geneva up early. The men got two more runs in the second inning as sophomore
Michael Twigg reached home on a Canton error before McGuire plated another run with an RBI-single.
The Roos managed to score one unearned run in the bottom half of the inning, but that would be the only run they got all day as Geneva's starting pitcher, sophomore
Dylan Rowe, tossed his best game of the season. The scoring continued for the GTs in the next frame, with Twigg blasting a two-run home run to left field in just the second plate appearance of the third inning. Senior
Zack Sackett and junior
Kirk Bearjar each recorded RBI-singles before the inning was over, and Geneva led 7-1 after three.
Another RBI-single, this time from senior
Connor O'Brien, gave the men another run in the fourth inning, and McGuire followed that up with an RBI-single of his own. Bearjar then doubled to deep centerfield to score more two runs on a hit that would have been a home run if directed anywhere but dead center. Up 11-1, the Golden Tornadoes scored five more times in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a two-RBI single by junior
Ethan Blair, who was pinch-hitting for Bearjar. That proved to be the end of the scoring for the GTs, and they ended the game with a 16-1 victory.
Rowe earned the win for Geneva, pitching 5.0 efficient innings and allowing just one unearned run on seven hits. Bearjar had a team-high three RBIs on a 2-for-4 outing, and McGuire led the team with three hits and two RBIs. Twigg went 2-for-3 in the batter's box, knocking in two RBIs with his home run. Babu (2-for-4, double, triple, RBI) and freshman
Marco Chenet (2-for-4, RBI, three runs scored) rounded out the top hitters for the GTs.
Geneva is off for the rest of the weekend before the men finish up their time in Myrtle Beach with two more games on Monday, March 17th. They are scheduled to play Plymouth State at 9:00 a.m. that day before taking on Western Connecticut State at 12:00 p.m.
