Softball “Rapps” up Great Spring Break Trip with Two More Victories

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior twin sisters Madison and McKenzie Rapp both had big games on Monday as the Geneva College softball team wrapped up a tremendous trip in Florida over Spring Break, adding two more wins to its program-best start to the year.  Geneva defeated Saint Joseph's Brooklyn 6-1 in game one, and then the Golden Tornadoes rallied for a 10-5 win in game two against Crown.  Geneva's record is now an impressive 11-1 as the women head back home.

Junior Sophia Tvaroch got the start in the circle in game one against Saint Joseph's Brooklyn, and she didn't allow a hit in the first two innings.  Geneva got on board in the top of the third on an RBI-single from Madison Rapp.

The Golden Tornadoes added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning, all after the first two batters were retired.  Junior Lexi Zanic worked a two-out walk, and after she stole second, she came home on an RBI-single from sophomore Kyra Wilcox.  Wilcox eventually came around to score on a Brooklyn error, and then Rapp added another RBI-single to bring home graduate student Julia Hart.

The Bears got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out run, and then Brooklyn looked primed for more in the bottom of the sixth after loading the bases with nobody out.  McKenzie Rapp relieved Tvaroch and worked some magic, though.  She induced a shallow pop-up to center, and then she struck out the next two batters to get out of the jam without allowing a run.

Sophomore Aliya Ottaviani and freshman Isabela Skrlac opened the top of the seventh with walks, and both came around to score on a single from Zanic to give Geneva two more insurance runs.

Rapp closed out the victory in the seventh to earn her first save of the season.  Tvaroch earned the win and moved her record to 3-1 overall, pitching 5.0 innings while giving up just three hits and one run, while striking out five.

Junior Justine Robbins led the offense with three hits, while Wilcox and Madison Rapp each added two hits to the attack.  Zanic and Rapp both drove in two runs, while Hart scored twice.

Freshman Micaiah Armstrong got the start in game two in the circle against Crown, and after a scoreless first inning, she ran into trouble in the second inning.  After recording the second out of the inning, the Polars strung together five straight hits to scored five times.  Junior Alena Campbell eventually relieved Armstrong and retired the final batter, with Geneva facing a 5-0 deficit.

The Golden Tornadoes rallied, though.  Geneva got on the board in the top of the third with two runs on RBI-singles from Hart and Robbins.

The offense then pulled even in the top of the fourth with three more runs.  Zanic worked a bases-loaded walk to drive in one run, Wilcox followed with a single to drive in a second run, and then a fielder's choice from Hart plated the third run, evening the score at 5-5.

McKenzie Rapp relieved Campbell in the bottom of the fourth, and she completely shut down the Crown offense, allowing Geneva to complete the comeback.

The Golden Tornadoes took their first lead in the top of the sixth, scoring four times to take a big advantage.  After singles from Zanic and Wilcox, Hart drove home both runners with a double.  Freshman Stacey Rodriguez then tripled with two outs to bring home Hart, and then Rodriguez came home on an error to complete the scoring in the frame.  Geneva added one more run in the top of the seventh when sophomore Malerie Branson came home on a double steal, and Rapp closed out the victory with another scoreless inning.

Rapp earned her sixth win of the trip with 4.0 innings of scoreless relief work.  She gave up four hits and struck out two.

Zanic helped orchestrate the offense with three hits and walk in the leadoff position.  Wilcox, Hart and Ottaviani each added two hits, with Hart driving in four runners and Wilcox and freshman Isabela Skrlac each scoring twice.

Geneva will make the flight home on Monday night and prepare for a pair of road doubleheaders this weekend.  The women will travel to Pitt-Greensburg on Friday for two games before opening Presidents' Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader at Westminster.  The Golden Tornadoes are slated to play their home opener on Saturday, March 29, against Thiel.
